GRU increases pass-through fuel surcharge for March

Press release from Gainesville Regional Utilities
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – GRU is increasing its electric fuel adjustment from 45 mills to 50 mills beginning March 1 to continue recovering millions of dollars in additional fuel expenses caused by natural gas shortages during this record-breaking winter.
GRU does not make money on the electric fuel adjustment portion of a customer’s bill, instead passing through its costs with no profit added. GRU regularly evaluates this charge and increases or lowers it based on market conditions.
“Natural gas prices have skyrocketed this winter, and it causes some confusion for customers who see gasoline prices falling,” said GRU CEO Ed Bielarski. “They are different commodities with much different processes. Unfortunately, this winter has caused higher demand for the fuel we use to produce electricity, and it has resulted in extremely steep pricing increases.”
GRU takes steps to mitigate increases by participating in long-term, pre-paid fuel arrangements and by maintaining a fleet of power plants that runs on a variety of fuel sources.
Since 2023, GRU has steadily decreased residential electric bills and gone from the second-most expensive electric provider in the state to within the middle third, based on Florida Municipal Electric Association statistics from February 2025 to January 2026.
A 1,000 kWh residential monthly electric bill will cost $151.60 beginning March 1.

Just turn up the wood burning stove to 11 to make more power … That’s the green thing to do ..
Amazing how Cost of Fuel Since Trump has Dropped Significantly but Rates and Charges are Going Up and not coming down reflecting savings on GRU Fuel Bill. Why is it, when things go Poorly we get rate increases and yet when they go well Rates Never return or receded even in times GRU Prospered
