Guatemalan national arrested for leaving scene after hitting cyclist

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ovidio Leonel Garcias-Herrera, 25, was arrested yesterday and charged with leaving the scene of a crash with injury and driving without a valid license after allegedly hitting a cyclist and driving away.

The Combined Communications Center received a call at about 3:40 p.m. yesterday about a white pickup truck that had hit a cyclist at the intersection of SW 24th Avenue and SW 17th Road. The cyclist was thrown from the bicycle and sustained abrasions and lacerations. The caller said that Garcias-Herrera never stopped to render aid and continued driving; the caller also said he was following the pickup truck.

An Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on the pickup truck about 30 blocks from the crash scene, and the witness reportedly identified Garcias-Herrera as the driver at the time of the crash.

Post Miranda, read in Spanish by a Gainesville Police Department interpreter, Garcias-Herrera reportedly admitted that he was driving the truck at the time of the crash and that he knew he hit someone on a bike but fled because he does not have a valid license in the U.S. or in his native country of Guatemala.

Garcias-Herrera told officers that he has lived in Ocala for about six years and is a roofer; he has no criminal history in the U.S. Judge Kristine Van Vorst set bail at $85,000 and ordered that Garcias-Herrera surrender his passport and travel documentation before he is released.

  • King Poe, King Chaos Ward, and City Manager ,please review and comment.

    • Exactly, it’s part of the DNC agenda to force us into mass transit. This and overregulation of auto, energy industries. They want everybody living like NYC does.

    • He’s been here for six years sounds like Trump is taking the loss for this one.

      • However our joke of a prez won’t send him or all the others he invited to come back where we don’t have to expose ourselves to their criminal ways. Right?

  • Deport, deport, deport…if you want to come into this country illegaly you have to at least have the courtesy to not run over our citizens and leave them for dead on the side of the road.

      • “Legal”? my arse! No drivers licence! No insurance! How would you like to get in a car accident with him?

        • Correct, he did not have a license and should not of been driving. However, your comment is ignorant when you scream deport someone who had papers to be in the country given to him during trumps administration.

  • Another example of how Biden is driving up our auto insurance rates, just one example.

    • He’s been here for six years.. I think Trump is taking the loss on this one. Confused why you think Biden is to blame if he wasn’t even in office lol

Desantcus has done plenty to raise auto insurance rates with the big regulation agenda he keeps pushing.

        • I’m not ignoring anything.. the facts are Trumps administration allowed his entry to the country. Desantis has embraced the democratic love of government regulation who takes the blame for insurance rates and still hasn’t fixed the problem of property insurance.

I’m not progressive I’m hard right but trump isn’t it anymore and sure isn’t desantis who is trying to control everything he can touch.

You’re starting to sound like a liberal lou
