Hanukkah message from Mayor Ward
Press release from the City of Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Friends, Hanukkah begins at sundown this evening. We had prepared a celebratory message to send you from me on behalf of the City of Gainesville, but in light of the tragic, savage attack on a Jewish community in Australia, I realized it fell short. Here is the simple, heartfelt original message:
As the menorah lights glow for eight special nights, may this holiday tradition bring joy and peace to our community and beyond. Wishing a bright and meaningful Hanukkah to all who celebrate.
I am at a loss.
As I try to understand the hate and fundamental lack of respect that brought about this attack and others like it. As I try to understand why we, as a human race, are so often unwilling to honor and celebrate the differences that make us who we are. As I try to understand what my Jewish sisters and brothers must be feeling today.
I am at a loss.
I am not of the Jewish faith, but I believe that the fundamental Hanukkah message of hope, the miracle of glowing light that inexplicably refuses to be extinguished, is universal and essential.
Know, please, that our community stands as one in the brilliance of that light, and that your mayor stands with you in this time and always.
I believe there is reason and responsibility to celebrate the light in steadfast defiance of hate and all that surrounds it. And I wish for a meaningful Hanukkah to all.
Harvey

Harvey, you forgot to say “Allah Akar”.
GFY
I guess the truth hurts. Harvey only cares about his base of nuts.I applaud the brave Muslim who went and saved lives by disarming the radical hate filled man. What we need is for the good Muslims to speak out against the radicals.
Instead we have people like you and Harvey that want to say we don’t understand them.
Thanks for the kind “GFY” shows your lack of education that you cannot argue in a civil manner. Kinda like the radicals
The world’s different races, religions, and even political organizations largely denounce this stupid attack, the telling feature of it being the arab shopkeeper who risked it all to tackle and disarm one of the gunmen. Let that be the world’s answer.
Mean while Fat Boy is yelling “Free Palestine” out is back door.
