Hawthorne man killed in SR 20 rollover crash

Special to Alachua Chronicle

Staff report

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – A 72-year-old Hawthorne man was killed this morning when his pickup truck rolled over in the median of SR 20.

According to a release from Florida Highway Patrol, at about 10:58 a.m., the man was driving east at a high rate of speed on SR 20 near SE 169th Street in a pickup truck when the truck veered off the road. The driver lost control and hit a guardrail in the median, then overturned. The driver of the truck was pronounced deceased at the scene. The release states that the man was not wearing a seatbelt.

  • The photo must be stock footage from somewhere else. SR 20 and SE 169th St is flat as a pancake and straight as an arrow.

    • If I call in an accident, I usually use the next crossroad or landmark as the closest to the wreck

    • I actual seen it and it is the real photo. It happened at a small bridge over a creek. There is a slight hill for FL.

    • This is the bridge just east of the road. It’s just west of SE 171st Street.

    • It was on the small bridge between Grove Park and Townsend Cemetery Rd (172nd? maybe). The photo is correct. The truck rolled and ended up atop the guard rail. The driver was ejected into the median. You can see the truck just over the blue light on the vehicle in the foreground.

    • Mr. Clayton was our friend for quite a few years. Owner of the Black Berry pig farm.

  • Probably the most heavily patrolled/radar’d stretch in all alachua county, save maybe i75. Surprised the sr20 gestapo didn’t run into each other pulling him over.

    • Why is your idiot comment necessary. A man lost his life in a traffic accident and all you got is SR20 Gestapo. The man could have suffered a medical issue, vehicle equipment failure, or something else. All you did was take a tragic event for someone’s family and turn it into a dig at law enforcement. You are the true idiot winner today

      • He was my cousin’s husband, a marine vet who recently had his lower leg amputated, and I am guessing that may have had something to do with it. We are all stunned and heartbroken….

    • I agree. Seatbelts are at time uncomfortable to wear. But they tend to save lives and do prevent some serious injuries. Its better than nothing.
