Staff report

HAWTHORNE, Fla. – A Hawthorne man was killed and an Interlachen man is in critical condition after a crash early this morning in Hawthorne.

According to a release from the Florida Highway Patrol, at about 12:20 a.m. on March 28, an 18-year-old Interlachen man was driving a pickup truck eastbound on CR 2082, west of SE 214th Street, and a 40-year-old Hawthorne man was driving a sedan westbound on CR 2082.

The pickup truck crossed the center line, causing an offset head-on collision with the sedan. The driver of the sedan was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the driver of the pickup truck was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

According to the report, neither driver was wearing a seatbelt.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

  • Very sad. I simply do not understand why in so many instances it’s reported that victims are not wearing seatbelts.

  • Does anyone know what happened a short while prior to the accident near hwy 301 and cr 2082 (near Ace Hardware) ?
Police had Main Street blocked at the railroad tracks. Helicopter was circling overhead and sirens were blaring.
Seems like it would be the same incident because it was so close in time and location. But it WAS NOT the same because I took video of the Helicopter circling at around 10:40 pm, and the accident happened after midnight!!
So, is anyone aware of what that was about? I’m very curious 🤔
