High school custodian arrested for carrying pistols on UF campus

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Hamod Hikeem McNutt, 28, a custodian at Buchholz High School, was arrested yesterday for allegedly carrying two pistols on the UF campus.

At about 9:11 p.m. on February 8, a University of Florida Police Department officer reportedly saw McNutt walking on the University of Florida campus and noticed that McNutt turned to go the other way when he saw the officer. The officer requested backup to prevent him from fleeing, approached McNutt, spoke with him about his reason for being on campus, and requested his identification, which McNutt provided.

The officer reported seeing a bulging item in the front pocket of McNutt’s hoodie, and after McNutt reportedly said it was a weapon, he was detained and placed under arrest.

A search incident to arrest reportedly produced a Smith & Wesson M&P 380 SHIELD and a Charter Arms Undercover .38 Special, along with loose ammunition in his pocket.

Post Miranda, McNutt was asked whether he was carrying the pistols the previous day when he had been seen on campus by another officer, and McNutt reportedly confirmed that he had the weapons at that time, also.

McNutt has been charged with two counts of exhibiting firearms on a school campus. He has no criminal convictions, but a 2020 charge of leaving the scene of a crash was dropped. Alachua County Public Schools confirmed that he is employed as a custodian at Buchholz High School, but he will be placed on administrative leave. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $200,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • The reason for which he was apprehended is very troubling. This is how police states operate. Citizens do not need a reason to walk around campus…it’s public property! Not acceptable!

    • Being black or brown is tough in our racist country.
Kavanaugh stop, black guy on campus!

    • Nope. It’s right in the article why he was stopped – “McNutt turned to go the other way when he saw the officer.” That’s called suspicious behavior.
Your very gullible, or stupid, if you think black and brown people are being stopped because of their skin color.

    • It’s like the bums asking for money on every street corner and you dont have to give it to them

  • We all know City Hall and UF are two places a black male does not need to do anything wrong to end up with the police being called or making contact. hihi.
Its a north central Florida thing.

  • If he was walking down the street or sidewalk it’s one thing. If he was up around dorms or within the business or classroom area it may be another. It only says he was on campus. Perhaps the change of direction when he sees a marked police unit or uniformed officer raises suspicion that he does not want contact with law enforcement. (Carry two guns on campus is against the law) The officer makes contact with him. He had been seen the previous day also. He has a noticeable bulge in his hoodie. When asked he tells the officer he has a gun and said he had a gun the previous day. The University of Florida has more females to male ratio. There is roughly 35 percent of the UF student population that fall under minority. 3100 black, 10400 plus Hispanic, the rest is made up of Asian and international students. The work force for UF rates higher then average among most universities for minority employment As liberal and DEI prone UF is and has been, it would be hard to believe that this guy was stopped for being black.

    • At night, a lone male (of any color or race) on almost any college campus in the US will attract the notice of police or security. If he reverses direction after seeing them, that intensifies their curiosity. Admitting to carrying a weapon merits apprehension; carrying two guns means this was a very good bust. Nothing reported here is racist.

  • No, it’s not hard to believe. If you don’t fit the college student mold, you risk getting stopped. Even more so being black at night there is almost a guarantee to be followed and stopped.

    • Some of the above comments reinforce my theory: Gainesville remains inherently racist despite its liberal voting record and the rhetoric of many of its residents.

The hypocrisy will live far longer than their legacies.

  • By any chance is he a family member or relative of a higher up school district official? 🤓🧐

    • Why would “McNutt turn(ed) to go the other way when he saw the officer” then? It was his behavior, very suspicious behavior, that led to his arrest in a “gun free zone”, not his ethinicity.

  • I can’t help, but when they linked him to being employed by ACPS I had to laugh, as he portrays what is happening in the school district.

  • What was his business there being on campus? Was he going to class or visiting a friend on campus? They call carrying 2 guns a “New York” carry…
He can’t carry a gun while doing janitorial work at Bucholz…

  • “he will be placed on administrative leave”

So….then what? Transfer to another school and all is forgiven?

  • How was individual charged with display when until asked by officer to present them? is the charge Walking while Black?

  • My guess would be something from the previous day alerted authorities to his behavior. I say, good job!

  • It would appear that the reporting is in error. I do not think a bulge in a hoodie would reasonably be considered exhibiting. One wonders if he was coerced into admitting he had a firearm. This has fish stick all over it. I only hope he gets a really sharp attorney that likes to get remunerations for illegal searches and seizures.
