High school student charged as adult with making bomb threat at GHS in September 2023
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Mohamed Walid Shehat, 18, has been charged as an adult with making a false bomb threat in September 2023, when he was 17. Shehat has also been charged with giving false identification information to an officer after allegedly giving a false birth date to a deputy and claiming to be 17 when he was 18.
At 11:34 a.m. on September 18, 2023, the school nurse at Gainesville High School answered the phone in the clinic and reportedly heard, “There is a bomb coming.” She asked the caller to repeat himself, and he again said, “There is a bomb coming.” The school nurse said she had answered the phone by saying the name of the school, her name, and that she was in the clinic.
Gainesville Police Department investigators determined that the phone number used to place the call was a TextNow number; TextNow is a service that allows a user to generate a phone number by creating an account. A subpoena to TextNow reportedly produced an account name of “Sia Tech” and a Gmail address.
The IP address used to create the account was traced to Shehat’s family’s home; Shehat was reportedly trespassed from Buchholz High School on August 22, 2023, and the account was created on August 25. At the time the bomb threat was received, Shehat was reportedly a student at SIATech Charter School.
Officers reportedly interviewed Shehat on September 19 and received consent to search his phone. The phone was reportedly logged into the Gmail address that was associated with the TextNow account, and the phone’s browser search history reportedly showed a search for “GHS” about five minutes before the bomb threat was made. The call history on the phone (which had been deleted but was subsequently recovered) reportedly showed a call to GHS at 11:34 a.m. on September 18. The location information for the phone also reportedly showed that the phone was at Shehat’s residence at the time of the bomb threat.
Shehat was arrested on September 20 and booked into the Juvenile Detention Facility. Formal charges were filed on December 5, and Shehat was moved to the adult jail on February 7 after being taken into custody at the Civil Courthouse; the Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy who arrested him reported that jail staff told him Shehat claimed to be 17 years old. The deputy reported that he spoke with Shehat, who allegedly said his birthdate was November 16, 2006. The deputy reported that it was discovered the next day that Shehat’s birth date is November 16, 2005, making him 18 years old, and Shehat was subsequently charged with providing false identification information to an officer.
According to court documents, Shehat is in the 11th grade at SIATech Charter School. He has no criminal convictions; Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $100,000 and added that he cannot have contact with any public schools and must be fitted with a GPS monitor if he is released. Bail for the false identity charge was set at $2,500.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Did he attend Buchholtz before being trespassed? Then he did that to GHS? He has a societal problem – as in living within it’s boundaries. Better put more than a monitoring device on him.
I’m sure someone will understand how to make a nice young man out of him in jail. If he’s lucky, the jail librarian can get a copy of “Melissa” for him to read. That is if the SAO’s doesn’t fumble the ball.
Love the haircut.
“Mo Shehat” will likely be his prison nickname at 18yo.
Mor’n likely som’body gunna be gettin’ mo’ ‘hat too.
He is doing what the middle east terror groups want him and other islamics to do. Act as individuals and terrorize western society.
I guess as a reinvented school dropout and attending a charter school hasn’t taught him right from wrong.
my bae 😍
You must have low standards and very little self respect.
“Shehat has also been charged with giving false identification information to an officer after allegedly giving a false birth date to a deputy and claiming to be 17 when he was 18” Put him away now before he blows up the next school.
Naming your kid Mohamed is NOT a good start, folks. Just asking for trouble 👹🤡💩🤬
Not sure it applies in this case, but only having 4 great-grandparents in your family tree can have consequences.
And NASA loses another promising future rocket scientist to the prison system. Sigh.
