Alternative Access Theatre: Ensuring the Show Goes On!

Regrettably, the Hippodrome Theatre’s historic 112-year-old elevator has reached the end of its life. Both the elevator company and the City of Gainesville have determined its closure is necessary. As the City of Gainesville undertakes an elevator reconstruction project, the Hippodrome Theatre introduces “Alternate Access Theatre” to ensure continued accessibility to live theater experiences during this period.
While awaiting the installation of a new elevator, mainstage performances will be adapted to take place on the second stage in the Hipp Cinema on the 1st floor, designed to accommodate individuals requiring elevator access or extra assistance with stairs.

For the upcoming Tony-Awarded Musical, “Next to Normal,” an extended run is announced, including staged concert-style shows on February 24-25 in the Hipp Cinema. Attendees who prefer tickets to an Alternative Access Show are encouraged to contact the Hippodrome Theatre, and arrangements will be made to switch their tickets to the designated performance.

Despite the setback, the Hippodrome Theatre remains committed to delivering high-quality theater experiences and invites the community to join them on this extraordinary journey with “Next to Normal.”

  • “…masterpiece that explores the highs and lows of love, loss, and mental health. Audiences can expect a raw and unforgettable journey that will leave them on the edge of their seats from start to finish.”
Thanks, but it sounds redundant when we’ve got the City and County Commission meetings as entertainment (unfortunately those performances, or at least there effects, aren’t free for taxpayers).

    • An amazing group of artists does an enormous amount of work to create something very special for our community, and you use it to show off your cleverness or lack thereof. Very poorly done.
