Homeless man arrested for attacking another homeless man while he was sleeping

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Roderick William Gilbride III, 40, was arrested yesterday and charged with aggravated battery on a person over the age of 65 after he allegedly awakened a homeless man, punched him in the face, and kneed him in the face.

At about 11:47 a.m. on May 19, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to the 800 block of West University Avenue, where the victim said he had been sleeping outside a business when Gilbride woke him up and asked him for some cigarettes; he said he told Gilbride he would give him a cigarette if he came back in an hour and then Gilbride punched him in the head several times and kneed him in the face and forehead several times before walking away.

An officer found Gilbride in the 700 block of W. University Avenue, and post Miranda, Gilbride reportedly said he had argued with the victim, but nothing physical had happened. When the officer told Gilbride there was a video camera in the alley, Gilbride reportedly changed his statement and said he had tried to wake the victim because he was sleeping in an awkward position and he wanted to check on him. He said the victim grabbed him in an aggressive manner and he pushed the victim away before walking away.

When the officer told Gilbride that the video showed him punching and kneeing the victim in the face, Gilbride reportedly said he was just having a bad morning because someone stole some of his belongings.

The victim is 65 years old, making the charge a felony; Gilbride reportedly said he knew the victim was in his 60s but didn’t know his exact age.

Gilbride, whose address is listed as GRACE Marketplace, has four felony convictions (one violent) and eight misdemeanor convictions (one violent). Judge Kristine Van Vorst set bail at $100,000.

All the crime will be moving there just a few blocks south of the university of Florida. “Build it and they will come”.

    👿💩👺🤡👹

  • Is it just me, or do half the stories here start with homeless (man/woman)? Because if it isn’t just me, that’s a sad state of affairs.

    • These are not “homeless people”. They are bums, dopers, and druggies. The sad state of affairs is because our Democrat politicians welcome them and refuse to create the necessary laws or allow the justice system to enforce those we do have.

    • I read this page daily. This story is templated due to its frequency. Just change the names/charges/location and how many felonies they have committed in their careers…

  • I’ll keep repeating this. Type the word homeless into the search box above and you can see hundreds of rapes, robberies, and attacks going back years. What you never see is the city of Gainesville solving this problem.

  • The ‘Post Office’ at Grace Marketplace needs to be labelled something else, so we don’t think all these bums (not homeless people) live there. Enforcing no panhandling and vagrancy laws would do a great deal in encouraging the bums to feed off of other sanctuary and welcoming cities.

  • There should be no vagrants sleeping in front of businesses on university Ave. I will boycott any establishment that allows bums to set up camp in front of their business. It’s not a good look for the city and the city manager needs to fix this!

  • Yes please don’t associate all homeless people together….I’m homeless but have a job and I stay away from Grace…

  • work camps, pea farm, would deter these vagrant types, what do they want. booze and drugs, what do they hate? work, no booze, no drugs

  • It’s going to get worse thanks to our liberal electorate repeatedly electing politicians that have plans to add two more ‘homeless shelters’ in old converted motels on 13th street. Won’t go downtown anymore as I’m tired of the homeless bums panhandling when going out to eat.

  • Story quote at the end for those just parroting nothing happens:
