Staff report
Updated on March 17 with pre-trial detention information.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – David Allen Dunson, 44, was arrested last night after allegedly trying to stab a man at a gas station on Newberry Road.
The victim told a responding Gainesville Police Department officer that at about 7:18 p.m. on March 8, he saw Dunson sitting on the east side of a building at the Oaks Mall Chevron (6815 W. Newberry Road) as he was getting out of his vehicle, and then he saw Dunson stand up, holding a straight knife by his side.
The victim said Dunson charged at him with the knife, and he ran back to his vehicle, got in, and locked the doors while Dunson hit his window twice with the knife and then stumbled back behind the store. The victim said he was in fear for his life when Dunson charged at him.
The officer reported that a knife was found next to Dunson and Dunson said he did not want to talk to the officer.
Dunson, whose address is listed as GRACE Marketplace, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has four felony convictions (one violent) and three misdemeanors (non-violent) and an unspecified criminal history in Alabama and Georgia that includes an active warrant; he has a Notice to Appear in Alachua County for allegedly stealing a shopping cart.
Judge Susan Miller-Jones ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial. On March 16, Judge Robert Groeb granted the motion and ordered him held without bail until trial.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Background checks at GMP might be a good place to start, after 10 years of operation.
Have background checks, metal detectors, drug tests, a Sheriff substation, and show progress or get kicked out. Stop making it a summer camp.
Thanks to our BS sanctuary county and liberal judges looks like we’ll be seeing more of this.
You cannot judge the majority by the minority; by this reasoning, we would out-law people with homes for every crime commited by people with homes.
This person is clearly dangerous. The vast majority of homeless people have simply lost their way and their faith in society. I know this because I go among them, bring them food and poetry, and talk to them.
Some people need help; some want to live free; some are saving money to make a stake back in society.
Broad brushes to not paint pretty pictures.
This look at the facts the number of people who live at marketplace that has been arrested for crimes against the very taxpayers who have to fund that place because the city mayor and commissionwants it The city of Gainesville would be a hell of a lot safer without that damn bunch now if you feel so good about them how about invite one or two of them come live with you and you take care of them and keep them off the streets and committing crimes.
Neither does the trash and uneaten food the homeless leave strewn about the sidewalks and roadsides.
At least we know where some of it originates.
Lock & load and train regularly so you don’t get a shiv when filling up.
Absolutely this is a perfect example of stand your ground law I don’t understand why more people in alauchua County don’t carry a gun
You might be surprised. That is why I prefer concealed carry.
I agree with you I carry concealed I can assure you, someone comes at me with a knife, won’t go to jail
While I agree with the sentiment to stay protected, a gas station, especially on a busy road, is not a safe place to shoot a gun in defense and should be the last resort. Fundamentals of firearm safety.
Always be hyper-vigilant, just as the victim in this scenario was. The victim was able to get away without shooting anything, and it ended up being safer for everyone involved.
Can we please put these homeless people in the Commissioners’ front yards!!
When those fill up, start putting them in the yards of those who keep voting for them.
Can we please put people who generalize all of the homeless community and post comments online with grammatical errors inSIDE of the tents of homeless people who have college degrees and who are “bout that life”?
Get over yourself ….
If you would have taken him home he wouldn’t be in this situation.
You’re just another hypocrite; in Gainesville—you have lots of company.
Why not comments like, “what do you expect from the west side of town” or “that’s what happens if you get gas west of Main St.”?
We need to put Puerto Rico to good use, to starve lawyers here.
