Homeless man arrested for damaging screen door and trying to attack man while saying he wanted to hurt people
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jeffrey Lawrence Gehringer, 52, was arrested yesterday and charged with simple assault and property damage after allegedly damaging a screen door and trying to attack a man.
At about 6:21 p.m. last night, Gainesville Police Department officers responded to the 700 block of NW 7th Street following a call about property damage and an alleged attack.
The property owner told the officer that when he arrived, Gehringer was drinking on his property, which he described as “not unusual.” However, he said that when he got out of his car, Gehringer became angry and started kicking the front screen door of his residence. The property owner said Gehringer dented the door to the point that it would not close properly. He said Gehringer then started yelling that he was going to beat people up and hurt people. A second man told the officer he saw Gehringer kicking the door and told him to stop.
Gehringer allegedly ran toward the second man and tried to hit him; he allegedly swung at the man multiple times and tried to grab him, but the victim ran inside. The man reportedly told the officer that Gehringer kept saying he wanted to hurt people. The first victim reportedly told the officer that he saw Gehringer trying to attack the second victim.
The officer reported that Gehringer stated in front of two officers that he wanted to hurt people and fight people.
Post Miranda, Gehringer reportedly said he did not kick the door and did not attack the second victim. He reportedly said he was mentally unstable and had been drinking.
Gehringer has four felony convictions (one violent) and nine misdemeanor convictions (one violent). He has no previous local arrests or convictions; court documents do not indicate how long he has been in the area, but the arrest report describes him as homeless and lists no address for him. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $10,000.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
This was posted today on google. This should make the woke government of Gainesville feel very proud. Goes right along with all the crime.
Gainesville, home to the University of Florida, may not be the ideal retirement destination for many. The city has a high crime rate, exceeding the national average, which can be a significant concern for retirees. However, a lot of the crime in Gainesville is concentrated in just a few neighborhoods and the city’s crime rate is comparable to other major cities such as Miami and Dallas but 68% higher than Tampa. The hot and humid climate may not be suitable for everyone, and the limited recreational activities for seniors can impact their overall happiness and well-being. Retirees should carefully consider these factors before choosing Gainesville as their retirement home.
This should make the fascist government of Florida feel very proud. Goes right along with all the crime.
Besides not understanding the word fascist, you might notice the only places in Florida with these problems are run by Democrats. But then, you might not get the connection.
It’s not the fascist government of the state of Florida. It’s the fascist woke government of the city of Gainesville who’s responsible for the crime get rid of market place cut crime by at least 30% quit trying the hands of law enforcement let them do their jobs
Yep. First chance I get I’m gone from here.
Gainesville has never been a city for retirees and who would want to mix old people with young people. It’s amazing how this article singled out the crime rate by saying only in parts of the city. That was bias then to compare this city to Tampa. It’s funny how this word woke is being used but not explained.
Is there an attorney willing to class action the city for grace marketplace?
In addition to possibly being held liable for the criminal acts of strangers or non-tenants, a landlord typically has a duty to protect the neighborhood of the rental property from criminal acts of their tenants. Most often, a landlord is held responsible for their tenants dealing drugs on the property.
FYI, local Antifa sympathizers want “free income” for ex-cons in Gainesville. The local advocates include (ex-)mayors and want to pipeline them from Starke prisons to Gainesville, and turn Taccachale into a giant village of GRACE-Reichert houses. They’ll get free income for their habits and terrorize “privileged” college students, hurting our biggest employer UF, and then the whole Dem city predictably collapses. So the GOP in Tally has to come rescue us again like with GRU.

Why can’t we drop these idiots off on a deserted island and let them take each other out?
Or the middle of the everglades.
Gainesville is not a safe town for families or college students.
If you are considering moving here, attending a conference or sporting event here, or sending your kid to college here–don’t.
The city is just an open air crack house now, with more violent drug addicts pouring in every day.
