Homeless man arrested for rape

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Michael Lee Hansen, 45, was arrested last night and charged with sexual battery after allegedly raping a woman he had met the previous day.

The location of the incident is redacted, but the victim reportedly gave the suspect’s first name and description to a staff member at the location, and the staff member provided Hansen’s full name from his registration information at GRACE Marketplace. Hansen’s address in previous arrest reports was listed as GRACE Marketplace.

The victim reportedly told a responding Gainesville Police Department officer that Hansen said she would be safe staying with him and led her into the woods. She said she followed him and laid her blanket on the ground for the two of them to sit on. She said Hansen began groping her; although she pushed him away and resisted his advances, she said he physically forced her to lie down, got on top of her, and raped her.

The victim told the officer that she was afraid of Hansen because he’d had a gun earlier in the day, but as soon as she felt it was safe, she got away from him and told a staff member about the incident. After the staff member provided a possible name for the suspect, the officer placed Hansen’s photo in a line-up, and the victim reportedly identified him as the man who sexually battered her.

Post Miranda, Hansen reportedly admitted having intercourse with the victim but said it was consensual and was the victim’s idea; he said he never forced her to do anything.

Hansen has three felony convictions (none violent) and three misdemeanor convictions (none violent). Judge Kristine Van Vorst ordered him held without bail.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • I’m betting no one will be looking at his face when he gets the same treatment.

    • And…..paid for by you & me too. If there was a referendum on the ballot to fund this monstrosity how do you think it would fare?

      • they’d add it on to an extension to Wild Spaces/Wild Places and hoodwink voters into voting yes. like they did with roads, fire stations and affordable housing last time. 🙁

  • I don’t remember us having this many problems with vagrants in GNV until they opened Grace Marketplace.

it was supposed to be a “10 yr plan to end homelessness” but made it worse. Thanks Rodney!

“Build it and they will come”.

I think it should be a temporary services thing for like 3 days to get you on your feet to your friends, family, or church or help you with transportation to get you back to where you came from….you know, a meal, a place to rest, and then bus ticket to where you came from.

Maybe a work camp thing so you can give back to the community and earn your keep until you get back on your feet…” a hand up, not a hand out”!

You know they all get a gov check but spend it on booze, drugs, & BS.

We don’t need the vagrants and their crime, filth, & panhandling setting up here permanently.

Maybe there should be a ballot initiative to that effect and shut Grace
Down. Whatever they’re doing ain’t working!

    • All valid options Pink, but more expensive than just providing tent space. We pay for this one way or the other, including arresting them, which is probably the most expensive option.

    • I lived in Gville for a number of years. I left in the early 90’s, recently returning to live in a suburban community.

I’m flabbergasted at how the ‘livability’ in Gville has declined.

We used to go downtown to dine at one of its great restaurants, or go to the the theater at the Hippodrome.

You could walk around town without fear of being accosted.

      No more. Very sad.

  • WTF is wrong with our STUPID local leaders and the 97% who didn’t elect them?
    🤡👹👿💩ACLUSPLCDNC

  • Sad but probably happens more than reported. Instead of a safe haven for those few in need. It is a place where predators prey on the vulnerable. When will a brave whistle blower employee report all the problems there. I knew things would go wrong when it opened, they did not run background checks on people. Every time someone is assaulted there all City and County Commissioners should be charged with accessory to the crime for failure to provide security.

  • Woe! The ‘prince’ needs some cosmetic surgery. Based on his current appearance he might turn into a toad if someone actually kissed him and that might be an improvement too?

  • Just another one of the countless murderers and rapists that Harvey Ward and Bryan Eastman intentionally import into our city through GRACE Marketplace.

You may think you hate our city commissioners enough, but trust me–you don’t.

  • Maybe if we get Desantis attention about the place they’ll shut it down or do something about it.

    • DeSantis just signed a law requiring communities to provide alternatives before arresting those camping on public spaces, and of course courts have held that as a requirement as well.

      • Obviously GRACE has no structure. Higher officials or perhaps a different director can take over and mitigate the crime or types of people at this place to implement more rules. From what I’ve heard , crimes go on at this place constantly from drug sales to people being raped and hurt. It has been ongoing and nothing is being done. I’m aware some can’t help being homeless or that their address is listed as GRACE marketplace and they don’t reside there. However what is GRACE doing besides providing shelter/housing and feeding the homeless and other necessities? The campus is open just for other crimes to take place ? Perhaps a hangout area. I never heard of such things happening at ST.FRANCIS. It starts with the head.

  • Any Comment Aereola District 22, Rawls District 20 , Poe ,working from basement, Ward fired ? Alord , MIA .
