Homeless man arrested for threatening delivery driver while holding a machete

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jason Ira Hosey Jr., 30, was arrested last night for allegedly threatening a delivery driver while holding a machete.

At about 9:43 p.m. on July 24, Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call about an armed disturbance at Holly Heights and spoke to an Instacart delivery driver who said that when he arrived, a white male wearing a blue shirt came out of an apartment and yelled at him to get his headlights out of his eyes. He said the man walked up to him in his vehicle and threatened to hit him in the head with the machete.

While deputies spoke to other people in the apartment, the victim told a deputy that the man who had threatened him had passed by on an e-scooter, now wearing a gray shirt. Deputies made contact with the man on the e-scooter, identified him as Hosey, and detained him.

The other residents of the apartment said they had ordered an Instacart delivery and had heard arguing outside, but they thought the argument was with a neighbor. A man in the apartment said Hosey had been wearing a blue shirt and had just come back inside and changed to a gray shirt before leaving on the e-scooter.

The victim identified Hosey as the person who had threatened him with a machete.

A resident of the apartment gave deputies consent to enter, and a deputy found a “very large knife” with Hosey’s belongings.

Hosey, who is described as homeless on the arrest report, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has no local criminal history, but he has arrests in Texas.

Judge David Kreider ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.
