Homeless man arrested on multiple warrants for battery, burglary, and property damage
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – James Timothy Ivey III, 40, was arrested early this morning on two warrants and also charged with possession of cocaine. He is also facing a sworn complaint for property damage at a convenience store.
Formal charges of felony battery and property damage were filed in February for an incident that was reported in August 2023. The victim told a Gainesville Police Department officer that Ivey broke her door off its hinges when she wouldn’t let him in and also punched her in the lower back. The victim told the officer that Ivey smokes “molly,” which makes him act violently. The officer reported that the victim’s door was completely torn off the wall.
A sworn complaint was filed in November 2023, alleging that Ivey shattered the glass door of the Circle K at 20 NE Waldo Road when a store employee locked it to keep Ivey out; she said he “regularly visits the location and causes a disturbance.” The employee reported that Ivey appeared to be “in an altered mental state.” Ivey has not been booked on that charge.
On January 4, 2024, a man told a Gainesville Police Department officer he was in his yard when Ivey approached him and he asked Ivey to leave the property. The victim said Ivey left, returned with a tree branch, and tried several times to hit the victim with the branch. The victim said he told Ivey he would “need something bigger.” Ivey allegedly left, came back with a bigger branch, and hit the victim twice. The victim reportedly blocked the first blow, but the second blow hit him in the head. The victim reportedly suffered a brain bleed and fractured thumb. A warrant for aggravated battery was issued in January, with a recommended bail of $75,000.
At the time of his arrest, he reportedly had 2.1 grams of cocaine in his pocket. Post Miranda, he reportedly said he did not know what the substance was and had just picked it up off the ground while walking.
Ivey, whose address is listed as GRACE Marketplace, has 14 felony convictions (three violent) and eight misdemeanor convictions (one violent). He has served four state prison sentences, with his most recent release in March 2020.
Court documents are not updated on weekends. According to the jail site, he is being held on $65,000 bail for the 2023 case and is being held without bail in the other two cases.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Homeless or not. He has been a plague with 22 convictions. He has served four prison terms without showing any improvement in behavior and shows no signs of being a productive human being in society. Culling from the population is probably the best option.
Mr. ‘need something bigger’ hopefully learned his lesson. You cannot play with these fools. I bet that brain bleed cost him tens of thousands in medical expenses let alone lost time at work. Stand you ground is all well and good, just make sure you can back yourself up if you refuse to back down.
His “brain bleed” didn’t cost him anything. It cost us. Do you really think he had insurance? Pulleeeseee
