Homeless man charged with armed burglary after allegedly entering screened porch and attempting to break into house

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ryan Michael Gilhooly, 33, was arrested yesterday and charged with armed burglary and property damage after allegedly entering a back porch and then damaging the back door while trying to pry it open with a knife.

The victim told an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy that he arrived at his home in the Sunny Acres area at about 3 p.m. yesterday and saw movement on the back porch, then saw Gilhooly trying to gain entry to the house by using a knife to pry between the door and the locks. The victim knew Gilhooly and was able to identify him.

The deputy’s investigation found that Gilhoolly had entered a fenced area behind the house, then entered the screened back porch, took out a knife, and used the knife to try to enter the house itself. This reportedly caused damage to the paint and the door.

Deputies made contact with Gilhooly, who is described as homeless, in the 10900 block of Archer Road. A search incident to arrest reportedly produced 0.07 grams of MDPV.

Gilhooly has been charged with armed burglary, property damage, and possession of a controlled substance. Gilhooly completed a deferred prosecution agreement for petit theft in 2021 and has no criminal convictions. Judge David Kreider set bail at $50,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • I wonder if anyone has statistics on just how many homeless people we have in Alachua County these days. The number seems to be growing by the minute.

    • Dangle, the people they hire to count them are other homeless people. Logic is they know where they live. My logic is they kick back with a few brews then return to collect their pay.

  • Judges and public lawyers are suddenly setting high bails in wintertime. It’s not because they’re decent, normal human beings. It’s so they keep their caseloads warm and stacked up in time for summer, when they’ll resume low bails for repeat offenders. This is why juries must be put in charge of the court system. Cut the pays of judges and lawyers, too.

  • Damn, google him and he looks like he was a normal dude once upon a time, nice little redhead piece hanging off his arm and a family and everything.

Now just some random, spun-out Gainesville bum.

    • Hes most definitely NOT. N the nice little redhead piece is me..his twin SISTER. my brother’s keeper 🤞🏻

  • Colaw is not a good judge and people we need to get him out. He is hard on the men and easy on the women. He is an evil man.
