Homeless man charged with breaking multiple windows on car said he thought the car belonged to someone else

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Fredrick Lamar Johnson, Jr., 49, was arrested yesterday and charged with property damage over $1,000 and possession of a controlled substance after allegedly breaking all the windows of a car except one and later saying he believed the car belonged to someone else.

At 2:50 p.m. yesterday, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to the 1600 block of NE 9th Avenue, where Johnson reportedly said, “I did it,” without being prompted. The officer reported that he saw a small baggie with a white rock-like substance in Johnson’s hand, and when the officer looked at it, Johnson reportedly said, “It’s molly,” before the officer asked about it.

The substance reportedly tested positive for MDPV and weighed 0.6 grams. Johnson also reportedly had a “blunt” containing tobacco and MDPV.

A witness reportedly told the officer Johnson had used a metal pole to break all the vehicle’s windows except one. Johnson reportedly said he believed the vehicle belonged to someone else at the time he broke the windows. The damage to the car was estimated at $1,200.

Johnson, whose address is listed as GRACE Marketplace, has five felony convictions (four violent) and five misdemeanor convictions (none violent). He has served five state prison sentences, including an 18-year sentence for carjacking with a firearm in Alachua County; his most recent release was in 2020.

Judge Walter Green set bail at $15,000.

  • Judge Walter Green, he wants to be locked up. What the hell are you thinking? He’s a menace to society. I think your $15,000 is missing a zero or two.

    • So you think this guy has 1500 to bond out? No!! There is no point in setting a bond at a million dollars when 15000 will get the same result…he is broke and homeless

      • He just loss his mother she was buried a few days before praying 🙏🤞🙏

  • Put him up at the Scottish Inn…house more homeless here. Do we still need Grace Marketplace to provide benefits to bring more vagrants here?
    I think we have enough

    • I would rather keep them and their crime all in one area. Instead of spreading it out over the city.

  • Thought it “belonged to someone else,” and that makes it okay?

Maybe if the person who owns the car thought he was a rabid animal and shot him that would have been equally okay.

  • Grace should not be allowing men like him to live there, instead buy him a bus ticket to Texas and let them take care of him.

  • I’m Getting tired of the phrase: “whose address is listed as GRACE Marketplace”. Lets wall this place in and put locks on the doors.

  • And that gives him the right to damage other peoples property I think, not put his ass in jail and keep it there
