Homeless man on probation arrested for throwing broken glass at woman who tried to help him

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – David Zovon Smith, 45, was arrested yesterday for allegedly throwing a glass shard at a woman who was trying to help him because he is homeless.
The victim told the responding Gainesville Police Department officer that at about 8:30 a.m. on July 9, she saw Smith at the back of her property and wanted to reach out to him to provide help because he is homeless. She said she had known Smith for several months.
However, while the victim was speaking with Smith, he reportedly became extremely upset with her; she said she tried to get him to calm down, but he threw a glass jar on the ground, and the jar shattered in the roadway. The victim said Smith picked up a glass shard and threw it at her, hitting her in the chest and causing a small abrasion. Smith then left the area and was arrested the next morning.
Smith has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He has 13 felony convictions (six violent) and 10 misdemeanor convictions (one violent), and he has served four state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2024. He was sentenced to one year of probation on July 1, 2026, after entering a plea of nolo contendere to trespassing after a warning. Judge Donna Keim set bail at $100,000.
