Homeless pair arrested for misusing 911 during suspicious vehicle investigation

Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jared Matthew Hale, 42, and Lauren Lee Langlois, 38, were arrested early this morning after they allegedly called 911 while deputies were ordering them to get out of their car.
At about 2:21 a.m. on June 28, Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle at the Circle K at 7501 W. Newberry Road; the deputies reported that Hale and Langlois were sitting in the car, which did not have a valid tag, and they allegedly disposed of ashes from their cigarettes on the ground, in violation of Florida’s litter laws. A deputy reported that the vehicle’s registration had expired a year ago.
Deputies reportedly approached the vehicle, explained the litter violation, and asked the pair to get out of the car for officer safety reasons. Hale reportedly said he was okay where he was because he hadn’t broken any laws, and neither of them got out of the vehicle. Deputies repositioned their patrol vehicle, with the lights on, behind the unregistered vehicle.
Hale was ordered to get out of the vehicle and walk back to the patrol vehicle, and the deputies reported that they again explained that refusing to comply with a lawful order could result in an arrest for resisting an officer without violence.
The pair allegedly continued to refuse orders to get out of the vehicle, arguing that they had done nothing wrong. After they were told they were under arrest, they still allegedly refused to get out of the vehicle.
During this time, Hale allegedly told Langlois to call 911, and she did, although they were verbally warned against calling 911 because there was no emergency. The call-taker reportedly heard both Hale and Langlois on the call, and Hale reportedly told the call-taker there were multiple law enforcement officers telling them to get out of the car, but they were scared and had done nothing wrong; the call-taker told them to get out of the vehicle.
Hale and Langlois reportedly refused to get out of the vehicle for about nine minutes, which led to a large law enforcement response, with additional patrol vehicles arriving. The pair eventually got out of the vehicle and were arrested.
Post Miranda, Hale reportedly said he did not understand his rights and said he had done nothing wrong. He reportedly later said he was “scared” and that he hadn’t slept in three days. He also reportedly told EMS personnel that he had told Langlois to call 911.
Post Miranda, Langlois reportedly declined to say anything.
Hale and Langlois, who are listed as homeless on their arrest reports, have been charged with resisting an officer without violence and the unauthorized use of 911 services, and they were issued written warnings for littering. They have no local criminal history, and Judge Jonathan Ramsey ordered them released on their own recognizance.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
I wish LEOs would do more about the other trash being left everywhere and not just ashes from cigarettes.
They should start citing the people who keep feeding the stray cats, maybe that’ll make a change. At a minimum, they should make those caring and sharing spirits perform community service during the Summer.
This is such BS! There’s so much crime every day in Gainesville and these cops are out here harassing people who are not breaking any laws. Stop wasting our tax money and do something that benefits our community.
Sheena- GPD and ASO are hiring. Since you have all the answers & could do such a better job….
Cigarette ash is one hell of a stretch for “littering,” and a license plate doesn’t have to be valid when parked in a private business parking lot. These charges are getting dropped quicker than a hot potato.
Traffic ticket only if no prior offense. Overkill response.

The point is police were trying to deal with homeless drug addicts, one of whom admitted not having slept in 3 days who are loitering at a gas station in an unregistered vehicle… Just some regular Gainesville “neighbors” minding their own business…
So you know they were drug addicts by one of them not sleeping maybe dude is balls hot in that truck have you slept with out the air on in this heat I’m just saying T bag you are casting stones without knowing the bigger picture
A 3-day meth binge is a definite possibility….
I saw a video of them asking for help on one of the Gainesville Word of Mouth groups on Facebook prior to this. Neither looked strung out on any drugs to me. He was really worried because they had no food, water or gas.
More homeless clickbait this site such a joke no story here moving on people
She’s a good looking bird for a homeless person.
If I have a campfire are you going to arrest me because the ashes from the fire littered the ground? How about a BBQ? Bonfire? Sonny’s BBQ getting ready for lunch? My fireplace on Christmas eve? Sparklers on July 4th? Cigarette ashes, come on… thats some chicken poop bs right there.
I’m tired of picking up others peoples litter & trash. Dispose of it properly! I don’t dump my trash in front of your house!
When you are surrounded by aggressive people with guns yelling at you to get out of the car it can feel life threatening. A call to 911 is appropriate. Not misuse.
If they put their patrol car behind you with lights on and are in a police uniform with badge and gun. It’s 99% they are legit.
Maybe they could use the shed in waldo
That’s a rough looking 42.
Maybe he really was having an anxiety attack or thought he was about to have a heart attack or something? They don’t know what preexisting medical conditions he or anyone else might have. The local “Deputies” often act like baboons, at least from what I’ve heard multiple times. Maybe he’ll end up getting a fat check after the charges are dropped.
Did they save the “evidence” (cigarette ashes) of his supposed littering?
Hope you never need one of the “baboons”, you know those guys who risk their lives to protect you? What a shameful, disrespectful, nasty thing to say about the people who risk their lives daily to protect us. Shame on you Peabrain.
Ppl need to stop resisting LE requests and just do what they ask. Ppl make a 5-10 min situation something way longer and unnecessary. Loitering in an unregistered vehicle in lot of business was just for a LE call. Gainesville residents need to do better and stop blaming LE for the terrible actions and decisions of the ppl. Ppl reap what they sow.
Unknown,
Preach it. These keyboard warriors are so tough.
LEOs need to start handing out fliers saying “Move to NYC, land of the free stuff, and no cars needed!”
When will the local gov’t budgets include this flier printing cost?
✈️🏢🌆🏙
Take them at NIGHT. ROR them at the marion county line south of Paynes Prairie after running over a few “snakes” and ” gators”.
Since when is ashes littering. The butts of cigarettes if thrown on the ground are littering but not the ashes. If ashes is what the officers are saying is littering that is pure bull sh*t. The couple didn’t do anything wrong. Were they actually driving the car or just sitting in the car. Were the keys in the ignition. If they were not they can’t even be ticketed for the expired tags. The officer could only asked them to get them taken care of. The police over stepped their power and should of only talk to them. There was no need for them to get out of their car. Really no need to talk to them. They were not causing any problems. Yes tgey should of got out when asked but they should of never been asked in the first place.
They should be out patrolling Holly Heights/Cedar Ridge, Tower Oaks, Majestic Oaks, Sugarfoot, and other random neighborhoods. With the way things work around here, I bet they had 10 or 12 police vehicles on scene by the time it was over. Get out and patrol like Adam-freaking-12 instead of always hanging out at gas stations and other “safe spaces” awaiting victims to call after crimes have already been committed and it’s too late.
Your dislike and disrespect for police comes through loud and clear. As for me, I’m thankful for them, I appreciate that they risk life and limb every time they go to work. God bless and protect every single one of them.
I am neutral or positive toward the police. However, I think the local department has been badly mismanaged for a long time. Patrolling randomly (not just certain spots) should be their default activity. And we need our own helicopters in the city.
Better get CSI on the case to collect those ashes, going to need them for this important arrest, we know that was just the cops excuse to harrass this couple just sitting in a car doing nothing illeagal.
A crack head will be a crack head.
Sounds like LEO were bored.
