Homeless woman arrested for squatting in vacant home, damaging plumbing

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Mary Elizabeth Hurtak, 34, was arrested last night and charged with burglary, utility theft, and property damage after allegedly squatting in a vacant home for several weeks and damaging the plumbing; she reportedly claimed to be a police officer from Miami and provided a false name.
At about 10 p.m. on January 26, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to the Porters Quarters neighborhood, where a witness said a vacant home had been broken into. The officer reported that all the lights were on inside the home, and Hurtak could be seen through the home’s windows; when Hurtak saw the officer, she came to the door.
Post Miranda, Hurtak reportedly said that she was an undercover police officer with the Miami Police Department, but she could not identify her sergeant, lieutenant, or captain; she also could not provide any information about the landlord of the home. She reportedly admitted to being in the home for “weeks” and admitted using the property as if she were a renter.
Hurtak reportedly said her name was Max Andre Black and gave a false birthdate; when the officer told her the name and birthdate were fake, she reportedly insisted her name was Max Black, and she was only identified after she was fingerprinted at the jail.
The officer reported that a bathroom in the home was damaged, with feces scattered all over the bathroom floor, wall, and toilet; plumbing was also damaged in the bathroom, and the officer estimated the damage at about $1,000.
Hurtak, whose address is listed as GRACE Marketplace, has been charged with burglary of an unoccupied structure, theft of utility services, felony property damage, and giving a false name to a law enforcement officer. She has three misdemeanor convictions (one violent) and has an active warrant out of Miami-Dade County for violating a pre-trial diversion agreement for robbery and battery. Hurtak was arrested three times in Alachua County between 2013 and 2015, and she was found mentally incompetent to proceed in 2016 but was later found competent to proceed in that case and completed a deferred prosecution agreement.
Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $75,000.

I would have never though this could possibly be a GRACE attendee, then again, those folks are fond of something for nothing. I don’t understand the destruction part, why ruin nice things just because you have no respect or decency.

She would have been better served picking a different alias then Max Black. She certainty does not favor the character from Two Broke Girls. And I am think she may be from Cleveland given her steamy decor in the bathroom. Just another chapter in the Disgrace Marketplace saga.
