Homeless woman on probation arrested for allegedly stealing tools worth over $6k
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Grace Hope Collett, 54, was arrested yesterday for allegedly stealing $6,500 in tools from a trailer at a shopping center on NW 13th Street.
At about 9:30 a.m. on June 15, an employee of a retail business in the 2300 block of NW 13th Street saw Collett walking behind the business with two shopping carts full of tools. He contacted the two victims, who were looking for their missing tools.
The responding Gainesville Police Department officer reported that the first victim said all of the tools, valued at about $6,500, belonged to him, and the second victim owned the trailer where the tools had been stored.
Collett, whose address is listed as GRACE Marketplace, has been charged with burglary of an unoccupied vehicle and grand theft over $5,000. She has one felony conviction (non-violent) and six misdemeanor convictions (non-violent); she is on probation after serving a two-month jail sentence earlier this year for purchasing over $700 in items with stolen credit cards. Judge Joy Danne set bail at $10,000.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Is someone keeping a record of the crimes committed by homeless people or people whose residence is Grace Marketplace? I am curious to know the stats.
You can use the archive search for a rough estimate, like: homeless arrest
Is it any wonder that our city and county commissions can’t grasp the obvious. They can’t learn from other failing progressive communities like Portland, LA, Seattle, Denver? If you put homeless benefits in our community….this is what your gonna get….and more of it. So…they will run off some profitable businesses and discourage more from coming here. They are about to lose tax revenue with the property tax amendment and they still can’t make sense of it. Wake up!!!
Several on the city commission see the cities you name as places Gainesville should emulate.
Do like they do in the middle east, you steal, they cut your hands off! Would have way less crime!
Bring back the pillory…a day in that and a one way bus ticket back to where she came from to be reunited with her friends, family, & church. Case closed.
Saudi Arabia still retains judicial amputation as a legal punishment under its interpretation of Sharia law, particularly for serious crimes like theft and highway robbery.
I can assure you this would definitely cut down on crime as for stealing goes
work camps, not only did she steal but she stole tools from a working man
