“Honored to be considered”: Rep. Cammack meets with Governor DeSantis about Senate appointment

Rep. Kat Cammack

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – At a press conference this morning, Governor Ron DeSantis mentioned Rep. Kat Cammack (FL-3) as a “fighter” who has a great record, but he also said it is unlikely he will appoint any House members to the Senate seat vacated by Marco Rubio because of Republicans’ slim majority in the House.

After a reporter asked about Rep. Cory Mills’ (FL-7) interest in the Senate seat, DeSantis said he would make an appointment “very soon” and that he expected Rubio would resign on January 20, with an appointment following quickly.

DeSantis said he had talked to a lot of people and had “a lot of credible candidates,” but given the three vacant House seats that are likely as of January 20, the House Republicans will only have a 217-215 advantage for several months.

DeSantis pivoted from Mills to Cammack, saying, “Kat Cammack, honestly, she’s a fighter; she’s really, really good, really strong, I think she’s got a great record, I spoke with her the other day. But the issue would be – are you going to go from 217 to 216? That’s a tough, tough thing, so I’ve been honest with the Congresspeople, that’s a big concern of mine because one of the criteria I had with who I’m going to appoint is, we just had an election, the President has a mandate; I want you to help facilitate that. I don’t want you to be sand in the gears.” He said that if his appointment reduces the numbers in the House, it could make it harder for Republicans to enact their agenda.

On X, Cammack thanked the Governor for his “kind words and consideration.” She continued, “I am always ready to serve the Sunshine State in any capacity that puts us in a stronger position to advance President-elect Trump’s America First agenda. Now more than ever, we need bold leaders who will fight as constitutional conservatives in both chambers of Congress. I’m eagerly looking forward to President-elect Trump’s inauguration on January 20th, and the opportunity to roll up my sleeves and continue to work for Florida in either capacity.” Cammack told Alachua Chronicle she was “honored to be considered.”

    • Maybe you can come up with someone the likes of Corrine Brown…a true convicted felon, jailbird and proud democrat who was my former congressional representative.

  • What a scary thought. When Florida’s two senators stand next to each other, Scott would be the smarter one.

  • Oh please. This is nothing more than lookie loo press release.

My kitten has as much of a chance.

  • Yeah, “fighter” sums it up. Useless partisan attacks and no accomplishments is her specialty. Of course that’s what the GOP House leaders all specialize in.

  • She is a fighter to be first in line at the buffet. After she clears out Ocean Buffet she gets to work on useless legislation that signals she is tough on stuff that already has laws.

  • Women like her need to be fixed like dogs so she has no miserable hateful children. All GOP women should.

    • New to the Chronicle?

There’s more people far more deserving living amongst the residents of Gainesville who could use that.

It would be of particular benefit for those of us who live here.

    • Look first at your GNVCC, SBAC, and ACBOCC if you want to try fat shaming! You Dems are SO ACCEPTING! Just like DELUSIONAL FJB and KUMMALA!

    • Our new Drug Guru RFK Jr opposes using Ozempic for weight control.

Our congress critter 03 will remain Phat Cammack.
