Ignite Life Center senior pastor charged with failing to report suspected child abuse
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Mark Anthony Vega, 55, the senior pastor of Ignite Life Center, has been arrested on a felony charge of failing to report suspected child abuse.
The arrest follows several other arrests of church members in recent years for molesting juvenile girls and boys, and the arrest report alleges that Vega was aware of the molestation allegations, told victims he would take care of it, and never reported the incidents to authorities:
- In February 2023, Gabriel Hemenez was arrested for sexually abusing multiple juveniles. He is currently serving a five-year prison sentence after pleading to the charges.
- In July 2023, Christian Vargas, Vega’s son, was arrested on two charges of sexual abuse of juvenile girls. Formal charges have been filed, and his case is still working its way through the courts, with the next hearing scheduled for January 2026.
- In February 2024, Noel Cruz was arrested for sexually abusing a juvenile girl. He entered a plea of nolo contendere to aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony, the lewd or lascivious battery charge was dropped, and Cruz was sentenced to three years of probation.
Vega was also a chaplain with GPD
According to the sworn complaint against Vega, he was senior pastor of Ignite Life Center (404 NW 14th Avenue) during all of the above incidents, and he was also a chaplain with the Gainesville Police Department during all of the incidents.
2019 – Incident on a church bus
Vega was allegedly aware of an incident in 2019 in which Hemenez inappropriately touched a 22-year-old man on a bus during a church trip. After the victim reported the incident, a meeting was held with the victim, Hemenez, and church leaders, and Hemenez claimed the sexual contact was consensual. The victim said he later learned that church leadership questioned his (the victim’s) truthfulness. The victim told a Gainesville Police Department (GPD) detective that Vega had told him immediately after the incident that he would “take care of it,” but the victim ended up leaving the church because Hemenez “appeared to not have been disciplined in any way.”
Hemenez told the police in 2023, post Miranda, that he eventually confessed to church leadership that the sexual contact was not consensual, and Vega told him he was not giving up on him and the incident was merely “a bump in the road.” He said he was placed on “probation” by church leadership after the incident.
2021 – Summer program for children/teens
In 2021, Hemenez was assigned to sleep in the boys’ bunk room at a summer program for children between the ages of 9 and 18. Hemenez was 28 years old at the time, and church leaders were aware of the incident on the church bus, but, according to the GPD detective, “in what could only be seen as a complete disregard for the safety and wellbeing of the boys” at the program, Hemenez was only the only adult sleeping in a room with 25 to 30 boys.
Hemenez allegedly grabbed the genitals of a 16-year-old boy during that program in 2021, and the investigation found that Hemenez was “grooming” that victim and other boys by sneaking “vapes” into the church and giving them to the boys.
Also during the 2021 program, a 13-year-old girl reported that after significant pressure, she met Vargas in a room known as “the furnace,” where they had sexual intercourse at least twice. A second girl also reportedly that she had sex with Vargas when he was 17 and she was 14. A third girl said she was 15 when she and Vargas started having sex.
In August 2021, Cruz, the son of another Ignite Life Center senior pastor who is described as the “second in charge,” began having sex with the 15-year-old girl.
October 2022 – Hemenez working in another church
In October 2022, the boy who said Hemenez grabbed his genitals during the 2021 summer program asked a church leader to bring attention to Hemenez’s behavior because he had access to children at a church in Orlando. That church leader said he told Vega about this the same day, and Vega assured him that he was going to report the incident to authorities. The church leader said he trusted Vega to handle the situation properly.
November 2022 – Church meeting with 15-year-old victim’s family
When the 15-year-old girl’s parents found out that Cruz and Vargas had been having sex with their daughter, they asked a female church leader for help, and they said the woman told them to contact Vega immediately. The parents said they were “shocked but not surprised – anything and everything of importance must be ‘run by’ [Vega]. [Vega] was truly, in their opinion, the person who ran Ignite, and he had to be aware of and involved with anything and everything that happened at Ignite or could happen to Ignite.”
The girl’s parents said they told Vega that his son, Vargas, and Cruz had been having sex with their daughter on church property, and the next day, Vega invited them to a meeting at his house to “scare the sh** out of these guys. They’ll never do this again.”
The girl’s parents said that at the meeting, Vargas and Cruz expressed remorse and asked for forgiveness, and Vega said they were going to begin a “process of restoration” by forgiving each other. The parents said Vega said Vargas and Cruz were “going to be restored because we’re brothers and sisters; we’re a church.” They said they were not asked about how they wanted to handle the situation and the information they had received.
December 2022 – Vega tells church leader to “investigate” and do “as he sees fit”
In December 2022, the boy who said Hemenez touched his genitals told the same church leader that he was upset he had not received any follow-up on the promise to report Hemenez to the police and that Hemenez was still working with children at his new church. That boy also told the church leader that he knew of three other victims of Hemenez from the summer of 2021; the victims were 13, 14, and 16 years old at the time. The church leader said he was then aware of at least five sexual assault victims of Hemenez, and four of them had been juveniles.
The church leader said he “immediately” called Vega and learned that Vega had never reported anything to authorities; the church leader later told the GPD detective that he didn’t “understand why it took so long [for Vega] to get something submitted.”
The church leader met with Vega, who had still not reported anything to the authorities, and he said Vega told him he could “investigate” the incidents and report them to authorities “as he sees fit.” The church leader interviewed three of the juvenile victims and made a report to the Gainesville Police Department in February 2023.
Spring 2023 – Second meeting with 15-year-old victim’s family
In the spring of 2023, the 15-year-old’s father, frustrated that Vega had not acted on the allegations, contacted another pastor at Ignite Life Center to say his daughter had been harassed by Vargas and Cruz since the meeting at Vega’s house. He said the pastor “expressed shock” and said he didn’t know anything about the situation; a second meeting was scheduled, which the girls’ parents described as “intimidating.” They said Vega asked the girl’s father if he “really wanted to get the authorities involved” and “ruin” the lives of the two young men and the girl. Vega then said the problem was that the young men had been “restored,” but the girl (the victim) had not been “restored,” so Vega decided she would be mentored by two female pastors and would spend one-on-one time with him (Vega). The detective reported, “Notably, [the victim’s] time alone with [Vega] included [Vega] buying [the victim] expensive sneakers.” The mentoring and one-on-one time “ended abruptly” when church leaders learned that the victim was cooperating with the police investigation into Vargas and Cruz.
Hemenez, Cruz, and Varga were eventually arrested. Post Miranda, Vargas reportedly told a detective that Vega had “walked in” on him once when he was kissing a 13-year-old girl.
Surveillance camera directed away from “the furnace”
A man who managed the church’s surveillance systems told the detective that he was reviewing security video on December 7, 2021, for an unrelated matter when he saw Vargas physically turning the cameras to point them away from the room known as “the furnace.” He said he reported this to a female senior pastor and to Vega, but he did not believe anything was done by church leadership in response to that information.
Conclusion
The detective concluded, “It is undeniable that [Vega] had sufficient knowledge – in the form of reports from others and his own personal observations – that children were being sexually abused on Ignite property by Ignite personnel. No evidence exists to indicate that [Vega] made any effort to report this to or involved the Gainesville Police Department. Rather, the evidence obtained shows the contrary to be true: [Vega] intentionally endeavored to keep this information away from authorities. It is indisputable that [Vega] failed to report known or suspected child abuse and child sexual abuse to the authorities, in direct violation of Florida Statute.”
The sworn complaint against Vega for one count of failing to report suspected child abuse was filed in August 2025, and a formal charge was filed on November 14. A warrant for Vega’s arrest was issued on November 20 by Judge Robert Groeb, with bail set at $50,000. Vega was arrested yesterday and posted bond the same day.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Wow, I never thought it was going to go this way. Was it discretion that first shielded the good CHAPLAIN? Was the good CHAPLAIN afforded some form of pseudo implied immunity? Was there a N.Y. coincidence,/connection? Those, they and them appear to enter C.Y.A. mode and withdrawl the tattered blue line of protection. What did the top cop Kramer know? Was this hashed out first with SAO8 like negotiating 6k pleas and 500 trials for the general public. No matter the chronological events the inactivity to prosecute remains constant… Top cop KRAMER what about those, they and them who conspired and confederated each with the other to do what was done until this point? Deception is fraud and fraud at the government level is corruption. Swift justice, I think not. Allegedly, of course, smiles
Thee factoid that this wasn’t on the wcjb tv20 news tonight is EXTREMELY TELLING!! This guy was head chaplain for GPD?!?Anyone else think that might have anything to do with it?!?!? These corrupt ass cop’s all around this part of florida will do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to protect their fellow gang members!!
What is even more disturbing is that during this same time period (2021-2024) Refugio Urbano was operating out of the church facilities. They provided services and housed unaccompanied migrant youth that had come across the border while waiting to be cleared to be released to their sponsor. Children from ages 2-18 spent numerous hours on that campus and during the latter half of that period, boys ages 10-18 were dormed on campus. How many of them may have been victims? The access to them would have been easy and who would advocate for them? They didn’t have a parent like the one in this article that insisted on behalf of his daughter. I’m not saying anything happened, but God knows how utterly vulnerable those kids would have been, and the predators next door would have known that. Too sad to even contemplate.
This can’t be true. I’ve been reliably told by the media that there was no child trafficking during the open border era of the biden regime and that absolutely no minors were harmed due to the US openly inviting millions of illegal aliens across our southern border.
“but TRUMP!!!!….”
Is this joking around?
Where is ICE?????
ICE needs to clean that church out. Send em back….send em back…send em WAY back!
