Intoxicated man arrested for pistol-whipping and robbing woman in pool area of Summit House
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Randy Harry Simmons, Jr., 21, was arrested last night after allegedly pistol-whipping and robbing a woman in the pool area of Summit House Apartments.
At about 9:45 p.m. on May 12, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to Summit House Apartments (2001 SW 16th Street) and found a 66-year-old female victim, covered in blood from numerous injuries. The officer reported that the victim later received 12-15 stitches to her forehead and 12-15 stitches to one ear and suffered a broken left hand/wrist and a broken nose.
The victim told the officer that a black male in a gray hoodie attacked her and hit her numerous times with the butt of a pistol; she said that while attacking her, the man also demanded that she give him cash or transfer money to him. She said the man took her phone and tried to send money to himself but failed; he also allegedly took a diamond ring, valued at $1,000, from her hand.
While officers were investigating the incident, a citizen called 911 to report that a black male in a gray hoodie was hiding under a truck in the parking lot of the apartment complex. Officers reportedly found Simmons hiding under a pickup truck, armed with two pistols. He allegedly resisted commands from officers to get on the ground but was eventually detained. He reportedly had blood smeared on one leg and blood on one of the pistols; since he had no fresh injuries, officers believed that the blood came from the victim.
Officers followed a trail of blood from the pool to the victim’s apartment, and “numerous” rounds of ammunition matching one of the pistols were found in the pool.
A witness reportedly told an officer that she heard a commotion and went outside, where she saw Simmons standing over a victim who was on the ground.
Post Miranda, Simmons reportedly said he had been drinking “heavy amounts of alcohol” and confirmed that he had both of his pistols at the time of his arrest. He reportedly said he was angry with his girlfriend and was standing near the pool when the victim started taking video of him. He said the victim didn’t say anything to him but was simply recording video with her cell phone, which upset him. He said he did not remember attacking the victim but agreed that he likely did; he also agreed that the blood on his gun probably belonged to the victim. He reportedly said his hand hurt, which the officer attributed to the number of times he hit the victim with his pistol butt.
Simmons has been charged with armed robbery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, resisting an officer without violence, and using a firearm while under the influence of alcohol. He has no criminal convictions but has some unspecified criminal history in another state. Judge Susan Miller-Jones ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s office to hold him without bail until trial.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
“I don’t think anybody is to blame. It was unfortunate, and we just have to move forward and come up with some better ideas on what we can do to have entertainment for our young people.”
That’s crazy and foolery.
you better oprn your eyes fool
Teach them some respect for their fellow man and laws of civilized people. It is disturbing how many late teen and young men lives are tarnished forever. “Entertainment” today consist of criminal activity. The enclaves that
CoG and AC provide at taxpayers expense encourage this behavior. The consequences of misbehaving must be severe, bring back the draft and chain gang.
Wasn’t Summit House mentioned in a different story, too? It’s right behind Steak N’ Shake, off SW 13th Street. They will probably have more and more problems with the new hobo hotels nearby, etc. Sad.
I think you are referring to the recent article about a fire in a residence there where a cat was rescued.
There was a kitchen fire at Summit house recently.
Lowest of the low. It would of been great if someone with a gun would of blasted his ass.
SW 13th strikes again. Nothing but violent young black thugs and drug riddled bums.
This young man is in a world of trouble. Not to mention that he will likely be facing enhanced charges since the victim is older than 65. He never would have never done this if he wasn’t drunk, but we can’t charge Jack Daniels of course. Alcohol has ruined so many lives.
Alcohol doesn’t make pacifists violent. I’ve been drunk hundreds of times and managed not to attack anyone. Why’d this 💩 have a gun at the pool in the first place if he was such a nice guy? Unfortunately this poor woman was apparently unaware that a large portion of black America believes violence and murder are appropriate responses to “disrespect.”
Never-never? A double negative is a positive….so…..you are technically saying he would have done this sober.
STOP PULLING YOUR PHONE OUT RECORDING PEOPLE!!!! PROBABLY WOULDVE WENT A DIFFERENT WAY!!😂🤣😭😂🤣😭
As I was saying…
This punk needs several decades in prison.
Very unneighborly in our community. What brought him to G’ville from another state? Quote “He has no criminal convictions but has some unspecified criminal history in another state.”…
ACLUSPLCDNC 👺🤡👿👹💩
He’s an idiot for coming to a college town if not going to college.
Wonder how he would like it if someone did the same to his mama? Heinous crime, good riddance! What a foot stool.
Scumbag beat up a elderly woman
This would not have happen if gainesvilke had gru back so we can spend some money on local stuff
