Jail inmates charged with attacking inmate on phone
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Aziel Dejayn BrownGainey, 22, and Montrell Cervonté Carter, 22, have been charged with battery on a person detained in a jail facility after allegedly attacking an inmate who was on the phone.
At about 12:21 p.m. on Sunday, BrownGainey and Carter allegedly walked up to another inmate who was on the phone; the victim reportedly took off his shirt and threw it on the ground, then Carter allegedly started punching him, and the victim hit Carter in self-defense. BrownGainey allegedly joined in, punching the victim multiple times, and then the victim was pushed over a railing and down some stairs.
An Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy who responded to the jail reported that video of the incident showed the victim sitting down, talking on the phone, when Carter approached him and attacked him, and then BrownGainey joined in. The deputy’s report states that the victim was “pushed over a railing down stairs located inside the cell block” but did not indicate which defendant allegedly pushed the victim.
The victim reportedly told the deputy that when Carter approached, he knew he was going to start a fight because of what he said as he approached. He said he took off his shirt in preparation for the fight. He said he hit his head on something when he was pushed down the stairs, and the deputy reported that he had swelling above his eyebrow and his nose was bleeding.
Post Miranda, BrownGainey reportedly declined to speak with the deputy.
Carter reportedly said he’d gotten into a fight with the victim over “petty stuff,” but he declined to answer any questions post Miranda.
BrownGainey has been in the Alachua County Jail since October 2022 on charges of first-degree homicide and conspiracy to commit homicide in connection with a September 2022 murder at Gardenia Gardens. Judge Susan Miller-Jones added $50,000 bail on the new charge, but BrownGainey is being held without bail on other charges.
Carter was arrested in October 2021 and has charges in seven other cases; the charges include racketeering, armed robbery, and sexual assault on a victim between the ages of 12 and 18. Judge Miller-Jones added $50,000 bail on the new charge, but Carter is being held without bail on other charges.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Cornell’s twisted obsession with “unlimited phone calls” at the jail (something he read in The Atlantic or The Daily Beast or similar lowbrow leftist publication) is causing these problems.
But why would this happen with unlimited phone calls?
Gainey gave an update to the county commission about how free phone calls are creating problems in the jail and for many inmates. The Chronicle did a comprehensive story on it. It’s far more complicated than you’d think.

Why haven’t either of these clowns gone to trial yet?
You rather them go to trial fast a win there case an be back out here ? Answer that!
They’ve been in jail, deservedly so, since 2021 and 2022. How is that “going to trial fast?”
Answer that!
Because the public lawyers are “so busy” releasing repeat offenders. 👹🤡🤬
Not these two, thank goodness!
I am a little amazed that there would be a murderer and a Chester in the same cell block so buddy buddy. I thought most Chesters would be kept away from other violent people due to reprisals from others. The victim who we must also recognize is a inmate too and may be as violent as the other two. They are all on the same cell block. Putting yourself in a position to be incarcerated for crimes opens to the door to other violent inmates attempting to harm the weaker. It will only get worse when free phone access happens.
Well there’s one good result of unlimited phone calls.
With any luck the inmates will limit their own usage.
🤣😂🤦🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
I’m starting to notice a pattern 🤣🤣🤣
By the look on Montrell Cervonté Carter’s face, he is not the least bit penitent.
These animals need longer jail sentences. They should not be freed in society.
Monsters or mislead, misguided and neglected as a adolescent individual. We are mock what we see and our adult lives are the outcome of our up bringing. If one is never taught to read then how would one know how to read. We are images of our parents normally how you are raised determines what kind of person you will be as an adult. Always remember judge ye less you be judged. No one’s the truth of either inmates reason for doing what they do just know if u don’t teach them guide them and show them they will never know.
None of the liberal lunatics or their leaders have come to offer bail assistance…even with the inequities in the judicial system?
These fine outstanding examples of society should be allowed to at least roam free until their trials – NOT.
Notice a trend here? The liberals of Gainesville are a bunch of hypocrites. They argue for the homeless but don’t offer room or board. They talk about the over representation of certain demographics in the judicial system but don’t offer financial assistance. They argue many don’t have employment opportunities but aren’t willing
Me? I’m just a conservative realist who recognizes the problems and understands if they don’t want to be fixed, they can’t be.
They can be fixed if they stop trying to copy wealthy/coastal cities, the opposite of an inland college town. Just to keep virtue signaling and feeding lawyers.
Force inmates to use snail mail. They have plenty of time.
According to a report that Sheriff Gainey gave to the County Commission in December, the “free phone calls” have just given the gangs in jail one more currency to take from other inmates.
The new system also makes it possible for inmates to get the person they’re calling to add in a three-way call, which creates opportunities for inmates to threaten victims if they decide to testify in trial.
Bottom line – this is an experiment that failed and a sane county commission would end this program. It hasn’t make it easier for family to talk to their loved ones in jail, it’s made it harder.

All these young repeat offenders in mugshots just prove “it takes a village” is a joke.
Two clowns with nothing to lose. Move them out of the kitty jail ASO oversees and send them to a big boy prison where they can see how truly tough they are.
ahhh diversity
What has happened now the wanna b gang members are claimig to own certain phones and CO’s are not doing a damn thing about it !!!
What is it that you would want the COs to do? They’re already at half the staff. They were in 2019. Now they need to monitor the phones. That’s as unrealistic as the commissioners that created this mess!
You are absolutely right; I expect them to monitor the phones. You are probably one of the lazy a$$ CO’s at work right now but on Alachua Chronicles instead of monitoring the inmates and their phone calls.
