GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Mayor Harvey Ward released the following statement today:
On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, freedom was finally delivered to the last enslaved people in the United States.
On that day, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and read an order declaring all enslaved people were free. Although President Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, its promises were delayed in many parts of the south where Confederate control remained and the truth remained obscured. Texas was the last holdout.
Juneteenth — now a federal holiday — stands as a powerful reminder that freedom came slowly, unevenly, and only through persistence and struggle. In Gainesville, our celebration begins every year on May 20 with Florida Emancipation Day, and we spend a full month immersed in the history and culture of those who endured and triumphed. This weekend marks the conclusion of our annual Journey to Juneteenth celebration.
As your mayor, I join you in honoring the legacy of Juneteenth and the ongoing journey toward justice. Here in Gainesville and across the country, we must keep working to build a future shaped by truth and opportunity for all.

I think it is important to remember all men who went to war to fight for the freedom of all people. Without all those men fighting to free the slaves it would not have happened. So we should also on Juneteenth take a moment to remember the sacrifices made by those brave men to fight for freedom.

I work in construction dips.. and have made payroll every week for 40 years. Before that I managed a 30 head cow/calf farm doing almost all the work myself including castrating calves, building fence, building out buildings and a barn, cutting hay and throwing the bales high up in that barn without a conveyor belt, keeping the old truck running, and feeding hay on winter nights with my kids in the back of the truck.
