Kindergarten Roundup to be held on April 16

Press release from Alachua County Public Schools

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Incoming kindergarten families are invited to bring their children to the annual Alachua County Public Schools Kindergarten Round-Up to become familiar with the school they’ll be attending in the fall.

All elementary schools that serve kindergarten students will open their doors on Wednesday, April 16, at 2:15 p.m. Children and their parents/guardians will have a chance to talk to teachers and staff, tour the campus, and learn more about their school.

The first day for students in the 2025-26 school year will be Monday, August 11, for students at most schools. A 2025-26 calendar for Rawlings Center for the Fine Arts is still under development. The school is on a year-round academic calendar.

Under Florida law, children must be five years old on or before September 1 to enroll in kindergarten.

Parents can begin the online registration process on April 8 for their incoming kindergarten students and any student who will be new to the district by going to www.sbac.edu/enrollment. Before school starts, and preferably well in advance, they will also need to provide to their child’s zoned school several required documents, including a birth certificate, proof of a physical exam performed sometime within the last year, immunization records, and two proofs of residence in the parent’s name. Examples of a proof of residence include a lease agreement, a property tax statement, a utility bill, or other documents.

Schools are open during the summer months to help families with enrollment.

Families who aren’t sure what school their child will be attending can visit www.sbac.edu/enrollment or call the district’s Office of Student Assignment at (352) 955-7700.

  • Kindergarten Roundup…what an unfortunate choice of words.

The word “kindergarten” comes from the German words “Kinder,” meaning “children,” and “Garten,” meaning “garden.” It was coined by educator Friedrich Fröbel in the 19th century to symbolize a nurturing environment where children could grow and develop, similar to plants in a garden.

Roundup is a brand name of the glyphosate-based broad-spectrum herbicide originally produced by Monsanto, which Bayer acquired in 2018. This product has been associated with health risks, including concerns about its carcinogenicity…and we all know it can kill anything in the garden.
