Letter: City will use GRU funds on “a stream of financial misadventures”

Letter to the editor
The Gainesville City Commission lost control of the utility because they punished 150,000 residents with unconscionable monthly fees used in substantial part to support a stream of financial misadventures. The City’s notorious fiscal follies have continued in a cascade of wasteful, unnecessary spending without even bothering to bid projects.
Now they wish to regain control over 90,000+ monthly utility payments that can be used to fund stunningly overpaid sub-par managers, numerous well-off consultants, lawyers, wealthy real estate associates, and landlords who continue to benefit from planned City giveaways.
The punishing continues with the city commission’s “special” vote, forcing residents to spend $250,000, only to prove, once again, that a small group of second-rate “representatives” remain in control of our town.

I sure have my fingers crossed, that the Commie Commissioners DO NOT GET THEIR HANDS BACK IN THE GRU PIGGY BANK! 🤞🤞
I wonder if those who voted for the Commission of Clowns resuming control of GRU funds would be willing to take the increase in “sure to come” rates for their neighbors who didn’t vote for it? Probably not, they never have had issues taking other people’s money and giving it away.
They voted for it – I didn’t.
As a County resident who has no voice – just what are the voters who have the right to endorse expanding thier cities personal piggy bank (GRU) and give the “leaders” of the “town” going to do? My bet is they will vote how they always do… with greed and disingenuous treachery. They will vote to allow the wolf of the (city council) to take the GRU henhouse of wealth and ignore what is “right”.
Agree. City Commissioners are corrupt thieves.
Then elect different ones. WTF is wrong with all of you?
We need a law that keeps the kids at UF and SF from voting in our local elections.
Are you unaware that folks mainly vote for their party regardless of the candidate? And that public opinion of a candidate is mainly driven by “clicks” or billboard presence that stick in one’s brain – instead of what that candidate actually is saying or “running on”? You keep saying “elect different ones”, but it doesn’t matter if name recognition is more than 50% of the reason someone votes. How about we vote to “require” at least and equal amount of representation from each major political party?
So, I guess you’re not into this democracy thing Words.
Move to Russia or China.
This one is a “collective ad hominem” — shifting from the issue to attacking the intelligence or sanity of the group as a whole. It’s ridicule pretending to be argument, intended to shame or provoke rather than persuade. Next usually comes “deflection” and ridiculing that someone is dissecting their argument. Next will be tone policing, and then frame shifting – a redirection tactic to prevent from losing ground. No matter the choices available, negative and mean are most likely.
No, straight up ridicule Santa – “WTF is wrong with all of you?” is not pretending to be argument. The 1st sentence was the argument.
There will be a lawsuit. Judge, or State will void return of control. Then, another ballot next year.
Dude – I mean Doofus – that’s why we have elections. WTF is wrong with you?
Straight-up ad hominem — pure name-calling and mockery instead of an argument. Ridicule pretending to be reasoning.
Yeah, and I’m the only one here who does that. Great “get” Santa!
That’s a familiar dodge — sarcasm in place of substance, and safety in pretending everyone’s equally at fault. It’s revealing, though. Anger and vitriol rarely hide well behind a joke. You accused me of chasing a “get,” but I wasn’t keeping score — I was naming what was happening. Calling out ridicule and mean-spiritedness isn’t a victory lap; it’s simply choosing clarity over cruelty.
alreadyproudly voted NO
They will use GRU as a crematorium for political opponents.
Voting in Gainesville is no longer a process that can be trusted. I published a report on how districts / precincts were rigged to support several candidates in recent city elections.
So what? End voting?
Brilliant!!!!!
