Letter: Melrose residents urge Alachua County Commission to deny permit for Wildflowers Music Festival
Letter to the editor
Melrose Forever, a grassroots organization, is voicing new concerns after organizers of the proposed Wildflowers Music Park announced event dates for March 13–15, 2026, and posted ticket prices, despite not having applied for or received a Temporary Use Permit from Alachua County.
The Melrose Business and Community Association’s (MBCA) annual meeting took place on November 6, where festival supporters claimed the event would “help local businesses” and “bring jobs.” Residents disagree.
“Melrose is a small town of just over 5,600 residents,” said Anne Rudig, spokesperson for Melrose Forever. “Wildflowers’ own website shows that food, lodging, and shopping will all be available on-site. There’s little reason for attendees to spend money in town, yet our community will bear the burden of traffic, noise, and environmental damage.”
Concerns raised by residents include:
- Traffic and Safety: No clear plan has been shared to manage thousands of vehicles on narrow local roads.
- Local Jobs: No paid local positions have been promised; staffing will rely heavily on volunteers.
- Environmental Impact: No public access to traffic, infrastructure, or environmental studies. When asked, a festival representative replied that review of studies done prior to permitting by the public is “Not gonna happen.”
“Melrose has always valued music, art, and community — but this event doesn’t reflect those values,” said Anne. “We’re asking the Alachua County Commission to deny any permit request for Wildflowers and protect our town’s rural character and safety. We don’t understand how a large music festival aligns with agricultural zoning.”

Hiw many attendees are expected?
They say 7000-10,000 eventually. That is a minimum of 3500 cars/vehicles and that translates to approximately 11 miles of cars on the roads leading to the park.
Melrose already has several possible venues for a music fest, like Gainesville does for the annual punk Fest. They’ve proven that over the years with other arts festivals. As for lodging, that’s to be determined with existing Airbnb rentals and nearby towns.
Why is Wildflowers choosing a place in the rural countryside, with camping? Is it so they can avoid pungent odors reaching nearby neighbors? Expect DUI car accidents to increase then, too.
🌱🤢😵💫😷
Why would DUI car accidents increase as a result of choosing a rural countryside location??
With “No Mask Hutchinson” involved, You can guarantee that the
Alachua County Commies will approve this in Melrose, and again screw their constituents!😢
What does “No Mask Hutchinson” mean? Was he one of those anti-mask skkkumbags during COVID?
Opposite he was for extended mask ordonances, but was caught at stores not wearing a mask as well.
The masks and respirators were never well-supported by randomized controlled trials, and health authorities initially did not recommend them until vocal social media campaigns demanded them.
They did create alot of trash and gave some people headaches and skin rashes.

The Infrastructure of Melrose cannot support such events. This will in no way benefit Melrose as a community. Leave that type of event to a larger town such as Gainesville. It will be supported there.
We have the spirit of Suwannee thing in live Oak for music festivals …that’s set up perfect.
Melrose doesn’t need this wildflower thing…
this is something where Hutch is trying to line his pockets.
Preserve Melrose and its charming way of life from these charlatans who want to exploit Melrose.
These organizers think this is a done thing selling tickets for next year.
Where’s the government in the sunshine? Follow the money.
“Nimby”! “Nimby!” “Nimby!!!”. But I’ll gladly go to someone else’s backyard to see a show…..
Alachua Chronicle, we thank you for your support and publishing of this article. Keeping our immediate Melrose “rural” is the way!
The Pelican is going to do sales for a year, just for this event.
wahhhh….we need something to complain about. I didn’t even know this was happening but now I’m buying a ticket just to spite this page 🤣🤣
This seems like an impractical location for a music festival. There are other existing venues, including here in Gainesville.
Absolutely! I’ve asked Mr. Hutchinson myself for supporting documents and received only insults and no communication. They are not interested in community. Community does not hide behind multiple layers of LLCs and nonprofits.
