Local student creates life-saving medical part for pigs; invention will be showcased at the Alachua County Youth Fair

Press release from 4H Grow ’em & Show ’em
NEWBERRY, Fla. – It’s time for the 2024 Alachua County Youth Fair & Livestock Show, which will be held at the Alachua County Agriculture & Equestrian Center through March 5. And while most people are familiar with the livestock entries, there’s a non-livestock entry that has been submitted this year that’s drawing a lot of attention.
Cameron Swallows, a 5th grader from 4H Grow ‘em & Show ‘em, has submitted an entry into the 2024 Science and Technology Non-Livestock competition.
He was inspired when his sister’s pig was sick and was diagnosed with a prolapsed rectum. The veterinarian that was caring for the swine needed a smaller medical part to help save the swine’s life. Cameron sprang into action and planned, designed, and used his 3D printer to create and print a life-saving medical part. Cameron’s design has since been used to save other pigs in the area. In creating this part, he has shown the importance of Science and Technology in Agriculture.Â
Spot On, Cameron!

This is fantastic! Congratulations Cameron! 4-H is a wonderful organization. I did not realize they have a Science and Technology Non-Livestock Competition.
Shouldn’t that read life-saving, oh well, no worries, as long as the pig is better, sounds like a pretty doggone smart young man.
Cameron seems to have a bright future! Well done!
