Longtime Gainesville journalist Nathan Crabbe announces run for City Commission seat

Press release from Nathan Crabbe for Gainesville City Commissioner District 2

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Longtime journalist Nathan Crabbe announced today that he is running for the Gainesville City Commission’s District 2 seat, pledging to work to make the city more affordable, protect the community’s environment, and strengthen its infrastructure.

Crabbe worked for The Gainesville Sun for more than 17 years, including nearly a decade as an opinion writer and editor. Since leaving The Sun, he has raised awareness about climate change and other environmental issues as editor of The Invading Sea website.

“I’ve long fought for government accountability and transparency, but now I want to play a greater part in making sure our city responds to the needs of residents,” Crabbe said. “We must make Gainesville a more affordable place to live while conserving green spaces and strengthening our infrastructure.”

He is running for the District 2 seat representing northwest Gainesville that is currently held by Ed Book, who announced that he is not seeking re‑election. Crabbe, 50, lives in the district with his wife, Colleen, a nurse practitioner, and their two children, who attend Gainesville public schools.

“I understand the challenges that rising energy and housing costs create for our community,” he said. “We need to work harder on improving affordability while protecting the environment, culture, and quality of life that make Gainesville such a special place.”

Crabbe was responsible for publishing letters to the editor and guest columns at The Sun and encourages community members to similarly share their ideas for Gainesville by emailing him at crabbeforgainesville@gmail.com.

  • This press release is insanely vague.

How do you plan to confront the issues that you’re running on? Where will the resources come from?….are you proposing to cut government programs or proposing to increase taxes?

How do you intend to be taken seriously if you will not address the most prescient issue on the city’s plate…the hemorrhaging purse.

Running on platitudes instead of substance is why we’re in this mess

  • Climate change, that’s all you need to know. An endless siphon going from your bank account into some liberal NGO.

    • List of statements by major scientific organizations about climate change

“This is a list of statements by major scientific organizations about climate change, that have issued formal statements of opinion, classifies those organizations according to whether they concur with the IPCC view (i.e. the scientific consensus on climate change), are non-committal, or dissent from it…..”

The list of concurring organizations includes every national academy of sciences in the world and every relevant scientific organization in the world, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

      Then:

“….Since 2007, when the American Association of Petroleum Geologists released a revised statement, no longer does any national or international scientific body reject the findings of human-induced effects on climate change.”

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_statements_by_major_scientific_organizations_about_climate_change

I’m truely sorry that almost all of the commenters here are ignorant fools, but no other conclusion based on their comments seems possible.

      • More cowardly name calling by the biggest fool in this city.

        • The shoe seems to fit you sane. So sorry you can’t handle the truth.

          • You are absurdley funny and full of the stuff you wallow in…. your list of “statements by major scientific organizations” is a joke…… Seems the scientific consensus has always relied on who is feeding at the trough of taxpayer funds… otherwise if you are a degreed and credentialed scientist that presents proof against anthropogenic climate change, you are labeled a heretic.

    • Agreed. Given the brief bio, that would be a hell nah!
Bet he thinks GRU should be back under control of the City Commission too.

  • I’d be interested to know what he would advocate for based on his priorities – is he in favor of EV bus and city vehicle fleets, for example?

How does he feel about the GRU transfers to the city coffers? Does he think those are good stewardship?

What about the biomass plant? Was he an advocate of that “investment” into renewable energy?

How would he propose to make housing more affordable? Subsidizing housing for those who aren’t working/contributing, or reducing the burden of government (taxes) on working families? Reducing crime would help reduce the cost of homeowners and auto insurance, for instance.

Would he prioritize fixing roads and providing sufficient routes to UF for commuters?

Would he advocate for reducing property taxes to make housing more affordable?

  • I’m surprised Gainesville hasn’t been invaded by more Blue state expats. It’s nit rocket science, we’re still cheaper than they are over there.
For some reason city leaders market Gville to illegal aliens and homeless addict criminals instead. Just to feed lawyers and build new courthouses? 👺👿👹🤡💩

  • ‘…pledging to work to make the city more affordable, protect the community’s environment, and strengthen its infrastructure…” These are lefty talking points that do not address the realities that we face every day in Gainesville. This guy worked for the Gainesville Sun? That alone moves him off my list.

  • He’s for implementation of great reset.

Climate change is United Nations propaganda… the planet 🌎 is fine.

He Would love to make you wear a face mask and have you take shots with vax passports for the greater commi good…

Respond to this Nathan to make me think otherwise.

  • What’s so sad is that there’s no intelligent people to run for office inside the city of Gainesville. Look at the current makeup commission and mayor. You would think someone would be smarter than that. Bunch of dumb people.

    • I disagree. There’s plenty of people who COULD run for office inside city limits, but the Blue Machine has beaten us all down over the years that many people don’t even try anymore. The liberal will lie, cheat, steal, and do anything they can to ensure that conservatives don’t run, and certainly don’t win.

      • And who among us in the common sense minority of City of Gainesville voters wants to beat their head against the brick wall of Marxism/the rainbow brick crosswalk of woke ideology as the sole voice of sanity on a 7 member board filled with 6 other members who are marxists and woke idealogues?

    • Give Wyatt Zintiz a look-see. A fresh voice that this City needs.

      • If i lived in Gainesville i would vote for anyone who is not in office right now i dob’t think it could get any worse

  • With his long experience Nathan is undoubtedly impressed with the quality of the opinions expressed here, the name calling is impressively grade school. To find out more of his ideas one only needs to read and explore further.
With his knowledge and experience he’ll be able to hit the ground running.
Thank you Mr. Book for serving.

    • Invitado: Book was a letdown and Crabbe is a parrot 🦜 for UN great reset.

Is the Gainesville Sun still in business? It was a crap paper and AC has a higher standard of journalism!

Are you still wearing your face mask for the big lie c19 which has a 100% survival rate? You fascist control freaks can put your vaccine passports and your CO2 regulation where the sun ☀️ don’t shine..

Climate change is caused by solar precession… we’ve had bums since the beginning of time …the job is to provide a safe city with police, fire, parks, and roads inside the city’s urban services boundary line…the ionosphere is out of city jurisdiction..the state of Florida and the federal government are in charge of that… the UN is a foreign government, they don’t have jurisdiction here…stay in your lane..

      • Hogwash, except the GNV Sun NOW stinks.
I appreciate the AC reporting on government/community meetings however its focus on mugshot crimes does a disservice e.g. Tuchman’s Law, attributed to historian Barbara Tuchman. As she put it, “The fact of being reported multiplies the apparent extent of any deplorable development by five to tenfold, or by whatever figure the reader would care to supply.” In other words, crime coverage doesn’t just inform us — it systematically inflates our sense of how much danger we’re actually in.
Covid and climate crisis comments is tin hat theorizing…

        • Invitado: hogwash? you can google the survival rate for C19 yourself.. it rounds up to 100% survival rate… But “oh, people are dieing”…

the UN does not have jurisdiction here…ask DeSantis or Trump..

I like the mugshots on crime in the AC…lets me know how much crime the climate change refugees (vagrants/homeless) are committing..

put your face diaper on and go to your safeplace with Tuchmans law..

    • Similar to most currently on the commission, he has no qualifications for a seat beyond loyalty to the local democrat party machine and a general lack of employability in the non-government, non-NGO economy. He makes no claim to having experience or education relevant to managing a large budget or enterprise.

  • I can see the thought process: instead of The Gainesville Sun being a propaganda outlet for the Gainesville City Commission, why not just integrate both to save time?

I wonder how many more millions of dollars Nathan plans to give to the crime bosses at GRACE Marketplace? Maybe we can clear out the libraries to provide safe spaces for the imported homeless population to use drugs?

  • Good Grief…. We all know Nathan to be be a non controversial, down to earth citizen with nothing but the best of intentions for the City of Gainesville and its citi….. hell I cant even finish writing that crap because I am laughing so hard…… Nathan is as communist as P H and supported EVERY fiscally irresponsible decision of the COG as well as the BoCC. He pushed the Democrat narrative thru his biased editorialship of the Gainesville Mullet Wrapper. How do you make “Housing Affordable” as a communist? Well you make other people subsidize it thru higher taxes or simply reallocate current taxes to cover that pet project and raise taxes to make up for the shortfalls that will occur. Either way it means higher taxes. One thing Communists are good at is spending other peoples money, especially since they believe in government forced generousity of the population. Climate Change? Hell you wanna stop Climate Change then get the government to stop interfering and cloud seeding our skies. Nathan will be a perfect addition to the COG and yall deserve him unless you get out and vote for someone more sane.

  • This is all we need…..another leftist on the commission chasing their climate change virtuous dreams with your $$$.

    • No one who possesses any common sense wants to run for the great opportunity of being the lone voice of sanity on a 7 member board of committed Marxist activists…We in D2 will probably end up with a commissioner with name recognition among the Democrat elite, one who pretended to be a “journalist” for many years and can now “come out” as his true Marxist activist self and be paid to enact the leftist policies he has only been able to encourage through his writing all these many years… Who wants to run against him to try to do what’s really best for District 2 and the City residents? Why would anyone? Todd Chase was the last one who had that fun job… I doubt he is recommending it to anyone.

    • Remember…it was Pegeen Hanrahan that ruined GRU by going biomass by trying to comply with UN Kyoto protocol that the US was not a signatory to…how’d that work out? Put the utility $1billion in debt, we bought the POS…DeSantis had to step in and create the Utility Authority.. where does zero waste by 2050 come from? That’s UN jargon…our local governments and NGO’s have been infiltrated & corrupted with
United Nations Agenda… sustainable development? That’s UN jargon…now you know..

  • I encourage all voters to check out candidate Wyatt Zintiz – a fresh voice with Gainesville-oriented ideas. Wyatt Zintiz is this city’s best choice to move forward.

  • Mr. Crabe. What have you done professionally since leaving the Gainesville Sun?
