Man arrested after allegedly threatening Chipotle employees

Steven Jamal Welch, 27, was arrested late last night after allegedly punching a man in the face at the Archer Road Chipotle and then later returning to the store, causing the employees to lock themselves in the back of the store.

Welch reportedly walked into the Chipotle on Archer Road at about 10:45 p.m. last night and told the victim he was angry at him and “didn’t want to have to show him.” Welch then allegedly punched the victim in the face twice and left.

Before police could respond, Welch allegedly returned to Chipotle, causing the employees and the victim to lock themselves in the back of the store. Gainesville Police Department officers made contact with him near Chipotle and detained him; he reportedly refused to provide any identifying information and was identified by his fingerprints at the jail.

Welch had an active warrant out of Georgia and a local warrant stemming from an incident at Bellamy Grand Apartments in which he allegedly banged on doors, then refused to identify himself and resisted detention by officers who responded to a call from the area. He is being held on $6,000 bail.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
