Man arrested after November 2024 shooting at Forest View Apartments sentenced to 120 days in jail, 3 years of probation

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jamie Lamarr Ball, 49, who was originally arrested in November 2024 after allegedly shooting a pistol multiple times at Forest View Apartments, has been sentenced to 120 days in jail, followed by three years of probation, after pleading nolo contendere to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

At about 6:49 p.m. on November 24, Gainesville Police Department officers responded to multiple calls about gunshots at Forest View (1000 SW 62nd Blvd). Witnesses pointed officers to building 13, where Ball was reportedly found walking away from the building, near the area where four shell casings were found.

Officers detained Ball, and a search incident to arrest reportedly produced a single .380 round in his pocket that matched the casings found outside his apartment, along with a set of keys that included a key to a safe. A K-9 search reportedly led to a pistol in a safe on the back porch of Ball’s apartment, next to a pile of mail addressed to Ball and a box of matching .380 rounds with five rounds missing.

Ball was originally charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, discharging a firearm on residential property, and using a firearm while under the influence of alcohol. At the time, he had two felony convictions (none violent) and 10 misdemeanor convictions (two violent).

In March, a formal charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon was filed, and the other charges were dropped. On June 24, Ball entered a plea of nolo contendere to the charge and was sentenced to 120 days in jail (with credit for 22 days served), followed by three years of probation. During probation, he must undergo drug and alcohol evaluation and any recommended treatment, abstain entirely from alcohol and illegal drugs, and submit to random urine testing.

  • Just how do the Democrat politicians of AC and GNV expect to solve their caused gun violence problem with wrist slaps like this? I’d love to hear an answer from Mayor Harvey Ward, a proud founder and supporter of our “Welcoming City”

    • Great question maybe we can pull the public records and budget and see how much the honest public serving City Manager Cynthia Curry & Mayor Ward have allotted to the gun violence program that’s not working. Like them it’s just another joke!!

  • Another slap on the wrist for another felon with a gun. Use the 10-20-Life laws and put these 🤡’s in prison where they belong.

  • These low sentences for convicted felons with guns is ridiculous. Don’t even bring up so called ‘gun control’ laws when you don’t prosecute them with existing laws.

  • A convicted felon should have the fear of a mandatory 5 year prison sentence if caught with a gun…if that don’t work, I’ll always think it should have….

  • I thought 10-20-Life laws were mandatory. Maybe DeSantis needs to review the DA/Prosecutor here in Gainesville.
