Press release from Gainesville Police Department

At approximately 7:47 a.m. today, numerous officers responded to Madison Pointe Apartments (2701 NW 23rd Blvd) in reference to an Armed Disturbance. The caller reported his father firing a shot after a domestic disturbance. There were several family members in the home at the time of the incident.

Upon arrival, officers confirmed that one shot was fired; however, no one was struck. As per standard operating procedures, a perimeter was established around the home. Evacuations of nearby apartments were conducted to ensure the safety of neighbors. Several of the family members exited the home. Special Response Teams including Negotiations Response, Emergency Services Team, and SWAT responded.

Officers conducted verbal negotiations with Ronald Leon Grant Jr. B/M (36 yo) to exit the home peacefully. This was a dynamic situation, as Mr. Grant would agree to exit and surrender and then threatened to shoot the officers. At approximately 10:20 a.m., Mr. Grant exited his home and surrendered peacefully. Mr. Grant was taken into custody and transported to GPD Station for interviews by Detectives.

Mr. Grant was transported to the Alachua County Jail and ultimately charged with Domestic Battery by Strangulation and 2 charges of Child Abuse.

We would like to thank the community for staying clear of the area and following guidance by officers. We would also like to thank Gainesville Police Department officers, Detectives, Special Response Teams, Dispatch, and Victim Advocates for their dedication.

  • Nice photo of what appears to be a very overweight police officer in need of a haircut. I am impressed.
At least the disturbed man was not killed.
