Man arrested for cutting man who was trying to retrieve stolen backpack

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Richard Oneale Griffith, 64, was arrested yesterday and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after allegedly trying to take the victim’s backpack, then cutting the victim with a knife when he tried to take it back.

The victim told a Gainesville Police Department officer that he didn’t know Griffith before Griffith took his backpack and he went to take it back, at which point Griffith pulled out a knife and cut him on the back of his head and then kicked him several times.

Post Miranda, Griffith reportedly said he became upset when the victim tried to take his backpack, so he pulled out his pocket knife, swung it at the victim, and kicked him.

Griffith has four felony convictions (none violent). Judge Walter Green set bail at $15,000.

  • “Birds of a feather flock together”…
    Probably happened at Grace Marketplace.

    • It would be great if all the crime Grace Marketplace attracts took place at GM, but unfortunately the bums just use it as a home base while they commit crimes all over the city instead.

      • Why not just install some razor wire and a few gaurd towers and never unlock the gates, let them in but nobody leaves.
