GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Brian Scott Burns, 25, was arrested early this morning after Gainesville Police Department received a report of a suspicious death and found a woman at a SW Gainesville hotel who had been murdered.
The woman’s body was found in a room at Stayable Select Hotel (2900 SW 13th Street); she was lying on the floor in a pool of blood and had a garbage bag around her head and a belt tied around her neck. There were two bottles of bleach cleaning products next to the body.
A witness reportedly said the woman had been staying in a room at the hotel with three other people, including Burns; one of the other inhabitants of the room had decided to ask Burns to leave, so he brought a tote with Burns’ belongings back to the room at about 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and saw the victim, who was already dead. That person ran from the room, and 911 was called.
Another witness reportedly said that Burns and the victim were in an on-again-off-again relationship and that when Burns used crystal meth, he would get “crazy.”
At 8:34 p.m., Burns was seen walking through the parking lot of the hotel and was arrested on a warrant for a criminal traffic case in which he had failed to appear at a hearing. While in the patrol car, Burns reportedly said that he only came out of hiding because he was hungry.
Post Miranda, Burns reportedly claimed to not know what had happened to the victim but later confessed to murdering her following an argument. He reportedly said he became angry with her and head-butted her, which caused her to start bleeding; he then choked her until she lost consciousness. He then reportedly said that after she lost consciousness, he grabbed a letter opener and stabbed her multiple times in the heart, then placed a belt around her neck and wrapped her head in a garbage bag. He reportedly said that he then took a shower, changed clothes, and sprayed bleach around the room “to destroy his DNA”; he then took some bags from the room and walked to an empty room at a different complex, where he slept in the closet.
Officers reportedly found some of his belongings at that other room, including a hat that Burns was reportedly seen wearing on surveillance video when he left the room where he allegedly murdered the woman.
Burns has been charged with dangerous/depraved murder without premeditation and destroying/altering evidence and is being held on $2,050,000 bond.
