Man arrested for stalking neighbor and child neglect

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Christopher Brandon West, 32, was arrested last night and charged with two counts of aggravated stalking, child neglect without great bodily harm, and resisting an officer without violence after allegedly stalking and threatening to kill a neighbor and leaving his two-year-old alone in his apartment.

At about 9:56 p.m. on Friday night, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to Addison Lane Apartments (4117 SW 20th Avenue), where West was reportedly standing by the victim’s apartment, armed with a knife. The officer reported seeing smashed glass and several broken eggs on the victim’s door.

West allegedly walked away from the officer and threw a knife on the ground; when the officer tried to detain him, he allegedly tried to retreat into an apartment and grabbed a door frame, and the officer reportedly had to force him to the ground to detain him.

The witness reportedly told the officer that she saw West standing outside the victim’s apartment, with his shoes and cell phone on the ground outside the apartment. She said she spoke with West, who said he was waiting for the victim and her family to come home so he could stab the male victim in the heart and kill him. She said West said he didn’t care about going to prison and that he took out a silver knife and extended the blade to demonstrate how he would stab the male victim.

The witness said she was so afraid that she immediately left the area and called the victim to advise her to call the police. She told the officer that West was so angry and irrational that she believed he would attack her if he knew she was a friend of the female victim. She said West was heading back to his apartment when she left, but the officer reportedly found West in front of the apartment when he arrived.

Once West was detained, the victim returned to her apartment and told the officer that West was her neighbor and that she had confronted him about some broken eggs she found on her car. She said West became enraged and argued with her, and she and a male victim left so quickly out of fear that she didn’t have time to lock her apartment. She said West tried to prevent them from leaving by following them and banging on their car as they left the parking lot, and the male victim had to get out of the car and push West away from their vehicle so they could leave. She said she called the witness and asked her to make sure the apartment was still secure and that West did not vandalize it.

The female victim told the officer there had been several “bizarre” interactions with West over the past two months and that it started when West first moved in and his cats got too close to the victim’s dog. The male victim said West called him derogatory names, and since then, West has been watching them “at all hours of the night.” The male victim said he had seen West watching him while sitting in his car and that other neighbors had said West was watching them.

The officer reportedly found a two-year-old child unattended inside West’s apartment; West allegedly left the child alone “the entire time [he] was attacking and threatening [the two victims] and waiting for them to return home.”

Post Miranda, West reportedly said he had thrown eggs at the victim’s door.

West has two local misdemeanors (non-violent) from 2013. Judge Kristine Van Vorst ordered him held without bail.

  • People are Batsh*t Crazy in this town. We need to hold these people accountable for their behavior. Come on judges. Do your job.

  • I hope they find a secure home for the two year old. This guy is mentally ill and should not be caring for a child.

      • For all of his issues Chris is actually the more responsible parent most of the time as the childrens mother is struggling with a health crisis and has been addicted to narcotics since she was given them at 14. She is not a bad person, she just hasn’t had her own life together for very long at any time and wasn’t ready or capable of currently caretaking for a child. Chris drinks and smokes pot which is bad and not acceptable when in custody of a child dependent but he does not use any other drugs despite having been around them and was encouraged to try them but refused. Despite how people who don’t know attempt to portray him… Not that he didn’t act in a way that invites any convoluted assumptions a person might consider.

  • Sad sad sad. It’d be great to know his bio and how he decided to make his life so miserable in a college town. Misdemeanor level history is no reason to stay stuck here so many years. 👺👹👿💩🤡drugs?

  • Do my eyes deceive me? The judge ordered no bail for a voting member of society. Things are looking up folks.
This fella here has some serious anger management issues. Hopefully he will get the treatment he needs.

    • I have known him since we were 5. I am sorry for the people he has put through this traumatic experience. I’m not defending his actions at all, however I do suggest empathy and compassion for someone that could be a beneficial and appreciated member of the community with some effort. It’s up to him to make the commitment to improve but I don’t believe he is a lost cause, just a bit lost and could use some help finding the light.

He is not a terrible person.
Untreated mental health Illness, alcohol addiction, typical toxic conservative upbringing, broken home, unplanned parenthood with an even less prepared co-parent who was struggling with a serious narcotic addiction, and many unaddressed behavioral issues.

He’s actually a cool person when he’s not having an emotionally unhinged episode. I’ve never known him to attack someone physically, or hurt any person or animal.
He doesn’t have a healthy mindset, reinforced lessons in conflict resolution, or experience with de-escalation and impulse restraint, necessary to engage in a respectable disagreement in order to consider or empathize the concerns of others and express his perspective and agree to a reasonable compromise.

He uses an act of displaying a threatening level insanity to intimidate people he is in conflict with as a means of discouraging them from interacting with him to control the situation by implementing unconventional tactics convincing the other persons to concede. Not okay but that’s his psychosis’ defense response coupled by paranoia and entitlement. Please don’t wish the worst on him. Hope that he grows past this and lives with more accountability and respect for himself and others in the future.

  • Doubt he was on the math team at high school. But, you never know.

    • He was part of the blues n jazz club and played guitar like Angus Young and B.B.King. Can tune by ear. Knows the entire discography of hip hop, and most other music from Live from the underground to Sky is the Limit. He could ball like Larry Byrd with a Ray Allen 3 pointer and no weight but no flinch or fxxks given. He genuinely believes all people are created equal at birth and disagrees with the caste system that divides them and provides opportunity and privilege to some while abusing and taking advantage of others based often on some form of xenophobia. He encourages others to make the best decisions for themselves even if he hypothetically tends to make bad decisions for himself. He’s intellectually capable enough to do many jobs but doesn’t consider any job to be beneath him and puts an effort into providing what he can for his two children that were unexpected and part of a chaotic relationship that has pushed him to the boundaries of his stress management ability without having succeeded in his intermittent attempts to remain in recovery for Alcoholism, without having addressed his spiralling mental health issues, and unresolved internal anger, fear, and sadness that requires years of therapy and has not even been started. Point is, everybody has value, anybody can snap losing their grip on how they react to reality if they don’t manage their general health from the constant stream of stressful life obligations and deteriorate into delusion and acting out of paranoia. They can also undergo a rehabilitation and emerge as a version of their better character attributes and decreasing the negative qualities frequency, intensity, and impact on others as they reprogram their behavior. It takes a lot of commitment, time, and humility to do but I haven’t given up on all but the worst of people who are beyond my ability to empathize with and Chris isn’t quite there yet… He is definitely not even close to praiseworthy for how he treats others but there’s hope that he will choose decency.

  • At the minimum no one was hurt except for the rosebuds he got resisting an officer. Which were probably deserving. He is in serious need of some treatment. All this over cats and dogs.
