Man arrested for stealing $12,000 bike in Haile Plantation

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Sonny Harold Attaguile, 37, was arrested yesterday and charged with burglary, grand theft, and possession of burglary tools after allegedly taking a $12,000 gravel bicycle from an open garage in Haile Plantation.

At about 3:53 p.m. yesterday, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a call about a stolen bicycle. The victim provided the deputy with surveillance video that reportedly showed Attaguile entering the open garage of his home and leaving with the bicycle.

Attaguile was located in the 8000 block of SW 24th Avenue, riding the victim’s bicycle. The deputy initiated a traffic stop, and Attaguile reportedly looked back at the deputy before riding away; other deputies pulled in front of him, blocking his path.

After deputies placed him in handcuffs, Attaguile reportedly stated spontaneously that he had found the bike. Post Miranda, he reportedly admitted taking the bike from an open garage; he said he walked over to the west side of Gainesville to find a bike because he was tired of walking everywhere.

A search of Attaguile’s backpack reportedly produced bolt cutters and other hand tools that can be used as burglary tools. He also reportedly had a large amount of jewelry, a leaf blower with its battery and charger, and several rare coins, along with a coin valuation book. Attaguile reportedly denied that the tools were used for criminal acts and said he found the leaf blower and its battery and charger “in the bushes.” Attaguile was reportedly surprised that he was being charged, saying, “Really, dude? It’s just a bike.”

Attaguile has been in the area for about six months and is unemployed, according to court documents. He has criminal convictions in Illinois and Hawaii, along with at least one conviction in another Florida county. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $65,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • Hopefully the owners of the other stolen goods will get their property back and he’ll be charged with enough to get him behind bars for a while.

    • Hopefully when he makes bail, he’ll find his way to Ward or one of the Commissioners’ homes.
They invited him, let them take care of him…at their house.

  • Glad to see crime spreading to some of the (((chosen peoples))) areas of town. I hope the city puts a grace market place and a criminal breeding hive right in the middle of it.

    • Good job ASO.

Its not a happy event to see crime spreading to *any* part of town. No law abiding, tax paying citizen should have to deal with an ongoing threat of low-level criminality that seems to be acceptable to the various commissions and some of the judges, regardless of geography.

  • 37yro and the Norwood Reaper is only at the temples. Good genetics. Too bad his IQ didn’t fare as well as his hair genetics.

Also LOL at drifting here from HI and IL. The blue states wouldn’t tolerate him anymore so he ended up here. As Here’s Justice… is bound to come along and say any minute now, he’s lucky the homeowner didn’t greet him with a 12ga. And does anybody good ever come from HI or IL?🤔

    • Only a $12,000 bike? But of course, it’s in Haile.
At least he has good taste in bikes.

  • This thief is lucky that we’re not under Islamic rule or he’d be trying to function without a pair of hands that had been amputated.

  • My bike was stolen off UF campus. UPD wasn’t too interested in doing anything about it. Blamed me for not having a U-lock. Funny… there was also a cut U-lock laying on the ground next to the bike rack.

  • Must be a “Snow Bird” wishing to spend the winter in warmer climate. If not, already he will go to Dis-Grace Market. There he will be helped with applying for SSD/SSI and Food Stamps. But this money does not hit his account until end of month. But after spending this money on illicit activities. Problem is income for the other 29 days in a month. Amazing he knew where Haile was located.

  • How lovely that our welcoming community attracted such a lowlife… “ Attaguile has been in the area for about six months and is unemployed, according to court documents. He has criminal convictions in Illinois and Hawaii, along with at least one conviction in another Florida county” 👹👹🤡🤡🍦🍦🍦🍦D

  • If you have a 12K bike in your garage, it pays to keep the door down and locked against casual intruders.

  • Had to go look up what a bike like this is. Wow.

Yeah. That bike is a down payment on a car, truck, horse….other forms of transportation.

    • LOL could you imagine if someone rode their horse to class and tied it up outside of Turlington?

  • Wow, Grace Marketplace is really bringing in the criminals from all over the US now, not just the southeast.

Hopefully when this guy is inevitably released with no charges, he will feel inspired to expand his criminal world tour to other countries. I would suggest Iran, North Korea, Russia…
