Man charged with hitting and threatening police officers after being arrested downtown for disorderly intoxication
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Robert Wayne Masey, 37, was arrested early this morning for disorderly intoxication and an open container violation, and more charges were added after he allegedly hit and threatened police officers at a local hospital and at the jail.
At about 1:45 a.m. on July 19, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to a call from the Arcade Bar (15 N. Main Street), where Masey was allegedly standing in front of the business, yelling and using profane language. The officer reported that Masey was holding an open can of Four Loko Gold, a violation of the City’s open container ordinance, and was visibly intoxicated; the officer also reported that Masey was not wearing shoes, could barely stand, and was swaying.
The officer reportedly gave Masey “numerous” verbal warnings to leave the area, but Masey allegedly refused to leave or to discard the can, and his actions reportedly disrupted the normal function of the business.
Two officers placed Masey under arrest, and he allegedly resisted being placed in handcuffs but was eventually handcuffed.
While being transported to a local hospital, Masey allegedly refused to get out of the patrol car and had to be “physically assisted” out of the car. He allegedly threatened to “head-butt” an officer and said he would “beat [him] to sleep,” adding a racial epithet.
Masey’s handcuffs had to be removed so the nurses could perform scans on him, and he was allegedly verbally abusive to a nurse. After the scans, an officer attempted to place Masey back in handcuffs, but Masey allegedly threatened to hit the officer and then hit him; the officer was not injured.
While Masey was being walked into the jail, he allegedly demanded that officers remove the handcuffs and threatened to kill and slap an officer, adding a racial epithet to the threats.
Masey, whose address is listed as St. Francis House, has been charged with an open container violation, disorderly intoxication, two counts of resisting an officer without violence, two counts of assault on a police officer, battery on a police officer, and threatening to kill a police officer. He has nine felony convictions (non-violent) and nine misdemeanor convictions (non-violent) and has served four state prison sentences, with his last release in 2023. He was last arrested in May 2025 for trespassing and was fined $326 after entering a plea of nolo contendere to the charge; he has not paid the fine yet.
Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $153,000.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Kind of makes you want to go downtown for a relaxing dinner. Good luck trying to make a go of it in our criminally insane sanctuary city.
I saw this guy on Friday night in the same condition outside of Harry’s restaruant downtown.
You are 100% correct. This was our first trip to Gainesville’s downtown in 2 years and I left with a nice meal and a boot on my car. Turns out I parked in what used to be a free city lot, but it is no longer… Had to walk through the “streetery” filled with transients sleeping on the ground.
It appears the city does not want paying folks downtown.
Gainesville is very busy. It must be stressing to turn a city into a bowery where people are afraid to go. Guess the Streetery idea is over now that they can’t sell the antique bricks.
A boot on your car?
Cars don’t get those for not paying parking fees – the 1st time.
Nope, this is now a private lot and the have “roam towing” which puts a clamp on your car instead of towing. I called them up, paid their fee and they removed the clamp.
If you paid for the parking you wouldn’t have gotten the boot.
No place to pay… The lot was formerly a city lot that had open parking in the evenings (at least it did 2 years ago.)
A private company bought the lot from the city and it’s now permit parking.
I did not realize that when I parked there, hence I paid my fine to the private company.
On a side note, the towing employee was professional and understanding saying he boots 10-15 cars a night out of that lot.
Lesson learned.
Lou is correct. I’d add that the last time I went downtown to eat was 2010ish. I avoid anything downtown as well as any address with NE or SE in it. My situational awareness says we should Be safe – NOTt stupid. Gainesville is no longer the home of the Happy Hippies of yesteryear.
“Gainesville is no longer the home of the Happy Hippies of yesteryear.”
Sad but true.
Gainesville has turned itself into an ugly (in more ways than one) plastic, parody of itself; no class or style.
It’s time for citizens to take over the courts. Demote lawyers and judges to same level as court reporters. Send repeat offenders away permanently.
Rid the ACLUSPLCDNC mafia from the other two branches as well. 👺👹👿🤡💩
Do residents of St Francis House or Grace Market have to pay property taxes?
If they don’t why in the hell do we have to? Some of those residents obviously know better than to give control of what money they have to the local financially incompetent leaders.
All he probably wanted was someone to talk too and show some compassion for his plight. The cop’s could’ve just taken him to bfe tower rd and dropped him off. He’d sleep in the bushes and away from verbally assaulting the public that doesn’t know how to deal with him like 8th Ave does. Problem solved. Finding his way home would be no different than when he gets outta jail this time!
I swear I’m going to become a cop so I can train these rookies on people skills and judging the situation accordingly.
The Tower Triangle has been horrific for decades.
20 miles North of Lake City, and down a dirt road. leave him there.
Robert Wayne Masey is the most winger name I’ve ever heard.
Yep, he’s such a “winger” that he’s not even registered to vote in Florida.
Inserted foot in mouth again. You such a winner
I’ll keep repeating this. Type the word homeless into the search box above and you can see hundreds of thefts, rapes, robberies, and attacks going back years. What you never see is the city of Gainesville solving this problem.
That is exactly what needs to be pointed out to Eastman, Ward & these bleeding-hearts who are turning Gainesville into a homeless cesspool & sanctuary city. And the voters as well.
Not that Eastman & Ward would care…but hopefully it would open the eyes of more voters
That’s what I’m hoping it will do – open the eyes of the voters.
alcohol is legal. it creates alcoholics. can’t blame him too much. the human mind is programmed to be addictive. otherwise we wouldn’t procreate.
Be aware Fred, a lot of folks on this thread don’t “get” sarcasm.
That looks like a demon.
Why are their so many of these types milling around this town ?
