Man extradited from Guatemala to face charges of sexually battering young girl in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Inmer Misael Barrios-Osorio, 39, has been extradited from Guatemala to face charges of sexual battery against a young girl when he lived in Gainesville between 2013 and 2015.

In May 2022, the victim’s mother took her to a hospital in another city and reported to police that the victim had recently disclosed that her father had repeatedly sexually battered her for “numerous years in numerous Florida jurisdictions,” including in Gainesville between 2013 and 2015. When Barrios-Osorio lived in Gainesville, the victim was under the age of seven.

The victim reportedly described several specific incidents in Gainesville and said Barrios-Osorio showed her pornographic videos on his phone and then directed her to do the same thing to him, referring to these activities as “games.” The four incidents described by the victim all involved penetration.

The victim said she was confused when she learned at school that she should speak up about sexual abuse; she said she asked Barrios-Osorio why she would get in trouble if she told anyone about the “games,” and he allegedly responded by forcefully sexually battering her again.

The victim also said Barrios-Osorio told her if anyone ever found out about the “games,” she should blame it on her brother, and he coached her on how to lie about the ongoing sexual battery; the victim said that when she realized it was not a game, Barrios-Osorio threatened to rape her younger sister, instead, so she continued keeping the secret to protect her sister.

The hospital conducted a medical evaluation and reportedly concluded that there were positive medical findings for sexual abuse.

A Gainesville Police Department detective filed a sworn complaint against Barrios-Osorio in 2023, charging him with four counts of sexual battery on a victim under the age of 12 and one count of showing obscene material to a minor. The detective noted that the charges corresponded to the four specific incidents described by the victim, but the “number of incidents is numerous and unknown.”

Barrios-Osorio could not be located at the time the sworn complaint was filed, but he has now been extradited from Guatemala and is also facing charges in other jurisdictions, including an active warrant for sexual battery in Lee County.

On July 23, Judge Susanne Wilson Bullard ordered Barrios-Osorio held without bail until trial.
