According to a release from Florida Highway Patrol, a 58-year-old Gainesville man was seriously injured while crossing NW 39th Avenue on a mobility scooter at 10:00 p.m. last night.

The scooter was initially traveling south on the sidewalk of NW 51st Street, approaching 39th Avenue. A semi driven by a 58-year-old Lawrenceville, GA, man was traveling east on NW 39th Avenue in the right lane. Although eastbound traffic had a green light, the man on the scooter attempted to travel south across 39th Avenue in front of oncoming traffic. Prior to completely crossing the roadway, the scooter was hit by the semi. The man on the scooter was transported to Shands hospital with serious injuries and was cited for causing the crash.

  • Happens all the time…not people getting hit but not pushing the button and waiting for the appropriate time to cross the street. I’m sure there’s some ambulance chasing attorney salivating to get this case.

City will be calling for bans on semis next.
