Man on pre-trial release arrested for stealing bicycle in front of a police officer

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Shivaun Moss Solomon Blake, 37, was arrested after allegedly stealing a bicycle in the presence of a police officer.

A Gainesville Police Department officer reported that at about 4:22 p.m. on May 21, the bicycle’s owner left the bicycle unattended “for a brief moment” at the shopping plaza at 1355 NW 23rd Avenue. The officer apprehended Blake after he had ridden about 300 yards.

Blake reportedly told the officer that he took the bike in the officer’s presence because he thought the officers were busy with more important things; he said he planned to sell the bicycle for $10.

The officer noted that the bicycle was valued at about $1,200.

Blake has been charged with felony petit theft with two or more previous theft convictions. He has one felony conviction (non-violent) and six misdemeanor convictions (non-violent); he is on pre-trial release for a February incident in which he allegedly stole about $400 in merchandise from a Walgreens store and was released on his own recognizance. He is also facing a sworn complaint for two shoplifting incidents in February in which he allegedly took 31 items from a 7-11 and then returned and took some beer and wine; he has not been booked on those charges. Judge Bo Bayer set bail at $5,000 on the bike theft charge.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • Oh well….another productive product of the enabling Left who think black criminals shouldn’t be punished and jailed.

  • That intersection (NW 13th St and NW 23rd Ave) has been an abomination for years. It is constantly littered with garbage, blankets, stolen shopping carts, and drug riddled beggars. I feel bad for those businesses. The cops need to grow a backbone and do their job…regardless of what the politicians tell them to do.

    • Slice: agreed…

He uses the same MO that the climate change refugees and unhoused are using making Gainesville unsafe with crime…

Enough already! Time for zero tolerance…we may have to enlarge the jail to accommodate all these refugees we are getting…

      Law enforcement needs to do
      “Operation bum out”…

I think Tallahassee needs to replace the ACSB, and the city and county commissions with people who can get the education and public safety jobs done.

      There’s an election coming up..

What are these lefty candidates going to do about the homeless crime? Probably Feed them like the crazy 🐈 cat lady…

  • Punishment should be enhanced for stupidity. I thought the goal of being a thief was to steal and not get detected.

  • How do we get better judges??? Oh, and, people don’t walk away from your bike for a moment without putting a couple of locks in it. We do NOT live in a high trust society anymore. This cyclist was VERY lucky that there was a GPD officer there at the crime scene and who cared enough to arrest this guy, even knowing that the chances are that the criminal will be back out there stealing from society and maybe worse, in no time at all…
