Man on pre-trial release arrested for stealing vehicle, shooting gun into air, and threatening to shoot two people

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Joel Angel Foster, 27, was arrested early this morning after allegedly stealing his girlfriend’s vehicle, threatening to shoot two people, and shooting into the air at Tiger Bay Apartments. Foster, who is on pre-trial release, was charged with six felonies and two misdemeanors for incidents that stretched over 12 hours yesterday.

At about 12:30 p.m. yesterday, Foster allegedly got into an argument with his girlfriend at Santa Fe Oaks Apartments, grabbed her keys, and took her vehicle, with her firearm inside, without her permission.

His girlfriend went to an apartment at Tiger Bay, and Foster reportedly went to that apartment several times yesterday, demanding to see her. At one point, he allegedly told the residents of the apartment they were “burning bridges and y’all going to lose everything,” lifted his shirt, and showed them a gun in his waistband; the residents immediately closed the door and called law enforcement, saying they were in fear for their lives.

The residents told a responding Gainesville Police Department officer that after Foster showed up a third time, around 12:05 a.m. today, they heard gunshots; another victim said Foster looked directly at her and fired six shots into the air.

GPD asked other agencies to look out for the stolen vehicle, and an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a high-risk traffic stop on the vehicle at about 1:30 a.m.

A search of Foster reportedly produced an empty handgun holster in his waistband and a plastic baggie with 30.3 grams of MDPV (molly) in his pocket. A search of the vehicle reportedly produced a 9mm handgun with an extended magazine, an SKS rifle with an extended magazine, two boxes of 9mm hollow-point bullets, and about 19 grams of marijuana.

Post Miranda, Foster reportedly said he had permission to drive the car and said he smoked molly “a lot” and planned to smoke it with a group of people. He said he does not sell narcotics and that he had the guns because he planned to go target shooting with a friend.

Foster has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, grand theft of a motor vehicle, domestic battery, trafficking in MDPV, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana.

Foster has three misdemeanor convictions (none violent). He is on pre-trial release on a false imprisonment charge from August 2023 and is prohibited from possessing any weapons; his bail in that case was originally set at $35,000, but Judge Phillip Pena reduced it to $7,500 in June, and Foster posted bail a few days later. On June 25, he entered a plea of nolo contendere to disturbing the peace and property damage for allegedly yelling at a Walmart employee and throwing merchandise on the floor; Judge Kristine Van Vorst adjudicated him guilty of the two second-degree misdemeanor charges and fined him $376. He has not made any payments and has been notified that he is over 10 days past due for making a payment or submitting community service hours.

Judge Donna Keim set bail on the new charges at $110,000.

  • Oh….he was just going to the shooting range! Ya, that’s the ticket….sure….what a bunch of BS!

  • I bet that bail and any threats the court has made has him shaking in his Nikes.

If you believe that you’re as gullible as those who keep electing the current city leaders.

    • How do you know he was wearing Nikes? Haven’t heard any left stories about Nikes should we not wear them a more?

  • This idiot wants to go to jail so please accommodate him. He’s a danger to the public. What a waste.

  • The judge should mandate that he attend that GNVCC gun violence summit thing after he posts bail…

he can be a speaker there and share with them why he commits violent crimes with guns and he can give them his input on what we need to do to help reduce gun violence here.

  • “… (section 8) Tiger Bay Apartments. Foster, who is on pre-trial release, was charged with six felonies and two misdemeanors for incidents that stretched over 12 hours yesterday.“ plus his history of SCUMMY public lawyers grooming him up to a future capital murder someday! All victims should band together and sue the court judges, file a protest to DeSantis too.

  • $110,000 is better than no bail at all. Judge Pena needs his head examined! Typical 8th circuit circus 🎪 🤡

  • Santa Fe Oaks is deep in the heart of the future conservative utopia of Springs County, where the good citizens luv the Second Amendment. This fellow is just following the local tradition of collecting guns. A 9 and a SKS? Some like the 9, some like the 40, some like the AR, some like the SKS. Takes all types to populate a Republican utopia, where gun ownership will be worshiped and probably required.

    • You won the award today. If ever there would be a conservative utopia call Springs County do you really thing these low life drug abusers and thugs will remain there? No, they will move to Gainesville where it’s easy pickings on liberals and progressives who believe in turning the other cheek when assaulted and to cower when yelled at. In a conservative utopia that you speak of there would peace after the first round of justified self defense cases. Criminals do not work hard at living. The choice is simple a conservative utopia where I get shot at or Gainesville where I can take what I want at any time. Let me know how that works out for you?

      • Please help me understand. Is there no crime outside of Gainesville? Retired republican here, but very curious if it’s so much better outside of city limits or in this proposed new county.

        • This Spring County thing is a pipe dream that may happen one day but not in the near future. Die hard liberals always throw it up there as if it would be a prison to conservative. Crime happens everywhere and every day. The frequency is the question. Do criminals prefer to prey on people who offer no protest and refuse to defend themselves. YES. There are places outside the city limits of Gainesville and the county where criminals are afraid to go and avoid. YES.

      • For the humor challenged readership: The use of the term “conservative utopia” to describe the proposed tax free underfunded fascist anti-Communist John Birch worshiping white-evangelicals-only-wanted Republican MAGAtard-only entity called “Springs County” is called “sarcasm.” google it if you need further information.
I live in the area proposed for Spring County. Don’t you dare use the knee jerk “if you don’t like it, move.” I was here first. I have NO desire to live under your proposed fascist Republican government. YOU and your ilk are free to move to a conservative utopia like Russia, or South Sudan, or North Korea, or Jonestown or anywhere. Got it? Bye Bye.

        • I never proposed a Springs County. Your liberal buddy A model citizen did. I just gave a possible future insight to what one would look like. I as a “hated Maga” person you so peacefully described understand their will probably never be a Springs County. But your fellow party backers seem to want one to put all of us mean maga supporters in. I look at Springs County happening as I look at Joe Biden remembering what day if the week it is.
