Man on pre-trial release charged with five felonies after allegedly hitting guard rail while impaired, fleeing, and dropping trafficking quantities of drugs
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Derek Gean Stacy, 38, has been charged with five felonies and four misdemeanors after allegedly crashing into a guard rail while impaired, running from officers, and dropping trafficking quantities of drugs as he ran.
At about 2:23 a.m. this morning, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy reportedly saw a car leaving the Circle K at 3509 SW Williston Road at a high rate of speed, with no lights on. The deputy reported that the car went north on I-75 at about 120 mph, still with no lights.
The deputy activated his lights and siren, and the car reportedly continued at a high rate of speed, weaving between lanes and vehicles on I-75. The car exited at Newberry Road, reportedly cutting off several vehicles and running a red light. The car hit a guard rail and became disabled, then the driver, later identified as Stacy, allegedly ran from law enforcement. As he ran, he reportedly dropped about 25 grams of MDPV.
Stacy was taken into custody by a K-9 team. A search of his car reportedly produced six more grams of MDPV, and powdered cocaine was found on the driver’s seat. The deputy reported that Stacy smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, slurred his words, and was unable to stand. He reportedly declined to produce a breath sample.
Stacy has been charged with driving under the influence, possession of trafficking quantities of phenethylamines, cocaine possession, fleeing law enforcement at high speed, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, driving without a valid license, keeping a car for the purpose of drug activity, possession of a controlled substance, and resisting an officer.
Stacy has at least four convictions for driving without a valid license. He also has nine felony convictions (two violent) and 10 other misdemeanor convictions (one violent). He has served six state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2020, and he is on pre-trial release for a charge of possession of over 80 grams of phenethylamines from May 2023. His pre-trial release conditions specify that he is not to possess or consume alcohol or illegal drugs.
Judge Tatum Davis set bail at $197,500.

These types aren’t addicted to drugs, they’re addicted to perpetuating crimes against others.
If the liberals were as adamant about discontinuing such behaviors as they were about cancelling people and parts of history they didn’t like, think of what a wonderful world it would be.
Until then, best be prepared, (if legally able). People like this are out there and they don’t care about you or your family and should be culled from society.
There’s 3 people, potential jurors, who are willing to give this career criminal a free pass. That’s part of the problem, they condone criminal behavior – bet they’re progressive liberals as well. Maybe it’ll affect them one day.
Everyone has different theories as to criminal behavior, and I have a theory as well.
My theory is that a lot of criminals- like Stacy- actually want to be caught. I can’t tell you why that is, but they do. No one drives 120 MPH with no lights on who doesn’t want to be caught. If he didn’t want to be caught he would be EXTRA careful and go 5 mph below the speed limit with all those drugs on him.
Maybe it’s a guilty conscience, maybe it’s a yearning for the carefree life of jail with no responsibilities whatsoever, maybe it’s the street cred that comes with getting your mugshot in the Alachua Chronicle. Whatever the reason, Stacy is exactly where he wanted to be tonite, whether he even knows it or not. And I don’t know how you fix that.
Its those free phone calls 24/7 at the jail that sold him on recidivism.
Anything you say on those phones can be used against you.
That’ll be the next thing the Commission “directs” the Sheriff stop doing.
Johnny: the guy was f’d up on drugs and could’ve killed someone. He needs to learn a hard lesson and be locked up a long time.
Ya fix it with a bullet real johnny
So I want to know something.
So do these guys buy the MDMA and Cocaine and so on, or does it get fronted to them? So when they get arrested, and the cops confiscate the drugs, how do they pay the big dealer back, if they have to do time in the clank?
This is why I personally believe ASO deputies and GPD officers need to be allowed to search through cell phones.
Tech support personnel should work at the jail, and phones should be searched to reveal connections and where the guns and drugs are coming from.
I think that much like Florida State Driver’s license says you have to blow in the breathalyzer, (on your FLA DLs it says you have to blow if suspected of impairment) phones need to be searched during or after drug possession or gun possession arrest.
Maybe I’ll write Desantis offices and see what they think.
It doesn’t matter what Desantis thinks. The U.S. Supreme Court says you need a search warrant to search an individual’s phone.
Thank you Befuddled!!!
This guy is nothing more than a low life drug dealer. He spend most of his adult life in and out of jail or prison. He has over 50 cases in alachua county alone. No need to discuss any options or his poor judgement or his misunderstood lifestyle. He still owes the courts money. A 30 or 40 year prison sentence will make him old man when he is released and too old to run the streets. Good riddens.
There’s goes our auto insurance rates, thank you Brandon voters.
Lmao how does a petty drug dealer have anything to do with Biden?
Maybe he voted democrat when the supervisor of elections was signing up voters at the jail! …you don’t think he voted for the orange man, do you?🤣
“Man on pre-trial release charged with five felonies”
Come on judges….enough with this stupid ‘pre-trial’ release on repeat offenders. Lock them up!
I agree, Florida needs to do away with cash bail altogether.
Some people need to just shut up and live your own life stop worrying about others Lol yall funny tho Go Vote For Trump Stupids
