Man on probation arrested after allegedly robbing a bank in a hospital gown

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Patrick Shane Johnson, 50, was arrested yesterday after allegedly robbing a bank while wearing a hospital gown.

At about 3:30 p.m. on August 27, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to a report of a robbery at Wells Fargo Bank (3505 SW Archer Road). The victims reportedly said a white male wearing a hospital gown entered the bank and gave a note to two different bank tellers, ordering them to give him money.

One of the victims said the suspect said he would “blow a hole in your head” if he was not given the money. The bank gave the suspect about $1,449 in cash, and he left the area in a red Hyundai.

A traffic stop was conducted on the Hyundai on SW Archer Road within minutes of the reported robbery, and Johnson, who was wearing a hospital gown, had about $1,258 in cash. No firearm was found on his person or in the car.

One of the victims reportedly identified Johnson as the robber.

Post Miranda, Johnson reportedly admitted passing the note to bank tellers with the intention of robbing the bank; he also admitted threatening one of the tellers because he thought the teller was “stalling.”

According to GPD Public Information Officer Art Forgey, the arresting officer did not know why Johnson was wearing a hospital gown; his booking photo is in a hospital bed because he was taken to the hospital for medical clearance before being transported to the jail.

Johnson has been charged with armed robbery. He has six felony convictions (two violent) and 17 misdemeanor convictions (one violent); he has served two state prison sentences, with his most recent release on July 16, 2025. He is on probation out of Marion County for robbery and cocaine possession charges. Judge Meshon Rawls ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • What happened to old school bank tellers keeping a piece under the cash drawer. Give him that. Would deter most of these types of crimes.

  • He’s been groomed by SCUMMY judges and public lawyers for TOO LONG. This is what we need to use Alligator Alcatraz for next…. 🤡💩👹👺👿

  • If the traffic stop conducted within minutes from the robbery, where did he spend $191 since they found $1258 and bank said he stole $1449.

    • He hid the rest under the car dash or put it in an orifice of some sort….must have become homesick for prison, 6 weeks out is too long.

  • A case of being institutionalized to the point that he needs to be locked up and cared for. Sad commentary on how some minds operate.
