Man on probation arrested for hitting woman with baseball bat

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – James Bernard Phillips, 60, was arrested yesterday for allegedly choking a woman and hitting her with a baseball bat.

At about 7:14 a.m. on November 17, Gainesville Police Department officers responded to the Kampus Inn (2820 NW 13th Street), where Phillips allegedly hit a woman with a baseball bat, causing severe bruises and an eye injury, during an argument. He also allegedly choked the victim, took her phone when she tried to call 911, and then stood in front of the door to keep her from leaving.

Post Miranda, Phillips reportedly said there was no argument, and he didn’t do anything.

Phillips, who has been designated a Violent Felony Offender of Special Concern, has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, and battery by strangulation. He has 19 felony convictions (four violent) and 12 misdemeanor convictions (four violent) and has served three state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2014. He was arrested in 2024 for stealing and pawning a bicycle and entered a plea of nolo contendere to pawnbroker transaction fraud on September 25, 2025; Judge James Colaw sentenced him to 3 years of probation.

Judge Jonathan Ramsey ordered him held without bail on the new charges, pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

  • He really needs to be in a mental hospital that is really dangerous to let a person like that out on the streets again

  • He’s doing everything as planned. The goal is a capital offense and he’s almost at the finish line. So SCUMMY judges and public lawyers can get a death penalty case on their desks to drag out for 20 more years. Job security in the ACLUSPLCDNC 🤡💩👿👺👹

  • Wonder what liberal hypocrite is ready to step up to the plate and let this POS watch their kids or their parents? Maybe their pet?

    If not, shut up.

He needs to be put down – like 14 felonies ago.
