Man on probation arrested for shooting into occupied apartment

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Seymoun Jezotal Mack Jr., 29, was arrested yesterday for allegedly shooting into an occupied apartment at Carver Gardens on July 12.

At about 11:10 p.m. on July 12, Gainesville Police Department officers responded to a call about multiple gunshots near Building 5 at Carver Gardens (1501 SE 15th Street).

A witness reportedly said there had been a fight between residents and guests in front of Building 5, and then the witness saw Mack (known to the witness as “Junior”) standing in the roadway; the witness said Mack fired multiple rounds to the north toward the group and then fled in a blue Toyota sedan.

An officer reported that a bullet hole was found in the window of an apartment that was occupied by two juveniles, and there were bullet impacts in the wall.

At about 11:15 a.m. on July 16, officers were at the apartment complex speaking with residents when a third victim said he saw Mack pull a black handgun from his waistband and then heard multiple gunshots; he said he ran when he saw the gun, so he did not see who fired the gunshots.

The officer reported that while he was at the apartment complex, a blue Toyota pulled up, and the third victim pointed toward the vehicle and said the person getting out was “Junior,” who had a firearm just before the gunshots were fired.

Four shell casings were reportedly found near Building 11, where a witness said Mack was standing during the shooting.

Post Miranda, Mack reportedly admitted to being at the apartment complex during an argument involving multiple residents, but he denied firing a gun. He said he was leaving the complex in a blue Toyota while the gunshots were being fired.

Mack has been charged with firing a weapon into a dwelling, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has three felony convictions (one violent) and one misdemeanor conviction (non-violent); he has served one state prison sentence, was released in September 2025, and is on probation in that case. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $350,000.

Laws must change if we want to reduce crime rates further. We could be like Japan if we weren’t run by lawyers here.
