Man on probation arrested for trying to enter apartment

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Criston Scott Worth Scanland, 61, was arrested last night for allegedly trying to enter an apartment.

At about 11:59 p.m. on June 13, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to The Point Apartments (3100 SW 35th Place), where the victim said she had been awakened by a loud bang on her rear sliding glass door and saw Scanland standing at the door. She said Scanland told her she needed to be out of the apartment by 7:00 and added, “One shot, one kill” while pulling on the door handle in an attempt to open the door.

Post Miranda, Scanland reportedly admitted that he had gone to his neighbor’s back door, but then he became uncooperative and started giving vulgar answers to questions in an attempt to be funny.

Scanland has been charged with attempted burglary of an occupied dwelling. He has two felony convictions (two violent) and one misdemeanor conviction (non-violent) and is on probation for vehicle burglary in a 2024 case. Judge David Kreider ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • He has not come across that right neighbor yet who will make him regret the words ” one shot, one kill.”

    • Good thing she woke up! 😳
      What a terrifying experience!

      His motive was burglary?

This story could have been much worse…remember the 34th street wall?

the bums are getting brazen enough to try and break into the police station.

Was this guy given some free housing so he didn’t have to live in an encampment in the woods?

The discussion at city hall should be about public safety and zero tolerance with panhandling and homeless crime.

10 year plan to end homelessness?

We should be getting reports from Chief Moya about his progress in reducing homeless crimes, ..

Grace Marketplace , the city of GNV, & Alachua county are not the statue of liberty for the dregs of society. We can’t afford it, it’s not worth it. Your altruism has created a public safety issue here.

      Time for “operation bum-out”!

Chief Moya: what’s with the load of crap & bicycles just outside where your place was getting broke into? Can you clean that up? Not a good look..

      • 10 year plan first started by Rodeny Long when on the city commission. how many decades ago was that?

      • Are you talking about the guy with the big collection of junk bikes who lives in the gutter on NW 5th St., right next to the south side of the main police headquarters?

  • Bullwinkle asks, “Chief Moya: what’s with the load of crap & bicycles just outside where your place was getting broke into? Can you clean that up?”

Is Bullwinkle referring to the guy with the big pile of junk bikes who lives in the gutter on NW 5th St., right on the south side of the main police headquarters?

    • Yes. That’s it… it’s a load of junk on city property next to the cop shop…

Public works needs to clean that up…

I just drove by now and it’s gone!

He moves that stuff around.. it was there for maybe 2 weeks…

      He’ll be back …he always does…

Maybe not now because put GPD on the spot about them being complicit and a homeless guy was breaking into GPD…

I made some comments about that and maybe someone in damage control said “we need to clean this up”

      • A GPD officer recently explained to me that the city commission interprets the state-mandated no-camping law to mean that a person is considered to be camping only if they’re using a tent. This guy doesn’t have one, technically speaking, so it looks like he’s entitled to squat where he likes on public rights-of-way and to deposit his many cubic yards of junk there. Who knows why he decamped this time, but I think there’s reason to doubt that anyone made him clean up or clear out.

        • That’s BS! The city can make a state law stricter, not more lenient..

the city needs to address this! …enough is enough!

The city can interpret camping without a tent!
