Man on probation charged with trying to hide gun from officers investigating armed disturbance

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Veron Espana Caine, 43, was arrested yesterday after an armed disturbance and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, cocaine possession, tampering with evidence, and resisting an officer after allegedly trying to discard a revolver while officers were chasing him.

A Gainesville Police Department officer reported that Caine was suspected of pulling a gun on his cousin in the Bedrock Pinewood Estates mobile home park and was walking backward away from officers when he was told to stop. Officers reportedly saw him reach into his jacket pocket and then run behind his residence. Officers chased him and reportedly saw him crawling on the ground toward the officers.

A search of the area reportedly produced a revolver in the backyard, along Caine’s path.

Caine was arrested on an active warrant for violating probation in Alachua County. A search incident to arrest reportedly produced 1.75 grams of cocaine.

Post Miranda, Caine reportedly said the substance was crack cocaine. He said he was running from officers because he had an arrest warrant and wanted to get rid of the crack cocaine, but the officer noted that he did not discard the crack cocaine before surrendering; the only item that was found in the area was the revolver. Caine also reportedly said that his cousin had pulled a gun on him from 7-8 feet away, but he wasn’t scared because his cousin is “soft.”

Caine has four felony convictions (one violent) and five misdemeanor convictions (two violent). He is being held without bail on the probation violation, and Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $66,000 on the new charges.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • Another New Years Eve in East Gangville. Another convicted felon with a gun and drugs in Bedrock. Where was Fred and Barney when this was happening? They could have Dino take a bite out of Caine.

  • I am so shocked a felon with a gun don’t they know it’s against the law for them to have a gun. The Democrats should spend more educating felons about the gun laws instead of trying to abolish the 2nd Amendment and tying the hands of law abiding citizens we need our guns to defend ourselves against the felons who can’t read

    • It’s you screwball 2nd amendment nuts that are the reason America is flooded with guns so don’t blame the democrats just look in the mirror.

      • Bill you are 100% right. All the those 2 Amendment nuts who went through the proper back ground checks and training need to turn their guns in. That way the criminals would not need to worry about a law abiding citizen having the ability to defend themselves. Even better let’s take the guns from law abiding citizens and given them directly to the non-reading criminals. This would be a great form of equity. Bill you are a real dumb-azz

        • Bill gets the idiot of the day award. Congratulations Bill, you are the first one of the year. How you take 2nd Admendment Rights and state laws and turn them into an excuse for a convicted felon in possession of a firearm is amazing.

        • All the good people need to have a gun🤷‍♀️Maybe that’s the only way .

      • Lawlessness is solely a product of the counter-cultural left and Hollyweird.

      • Bill. The Genie is out of the bottle. The horse out of the barn and down the road. Outlawing guns for the law-abiding would only lead to a worst case scenario of only the outlaws with guns along with serious possibility of totalitarianism.

      • Bill you forgot to mention to disarm law enforcement. I’m sure you’re for that also. If you really cared you would work with these communities. Helping to change their culture.

    • Man I am sorry that you have to feel this way. All that your grandma has been through, gave her hug before Thanks Giving (know her, knew your grandad, uncle Carlos and aunt Veronica my whole life as well as your dad), Lonnie would have tried to yank knot in his butt. You come from a good family, just do better and keep him in your prayers.
