Man recently released from prison arrested for attacking elderly man outside hospital
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Aubrey Chase Mathis, 31, who was released from prison on July 8, allegedly attacked an elderly man outside HCA Florida North Florida Hospital on Thursday.
At about 10 a.m. on July 11, Mathis allegedly punched the victim in the head multiple times, causing the victim to fall to the ground; the victim, who is 74 years old and uses a walker, reportedly suffered a laceration to the back of his head. The attack happened outside the west entrance of the hospital (6500 W. Newberry Road).
A Gainesville Police Department officer reportedly saw Mathis running from the scene and saw him cross Newberry Road. The officer ordered Mathis to get on the ground, but Mathis allegedly refused all commands until another officer arrived.
Mathis has been charged with battery on a person 65 years of age or older and resisting an officer without violence. He has 14 felony convictions (three violent) and seven misdemeanor convictions (none violent); he has served four state prison terms and was last released three days before the incident. He is described as homeless on the arrest report. Judge Kristine Van Vorst set bail at $75,000.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Ratta tat tat would fix that.
AMEN—hardly worth the waste of ammunition — scum-bag‼️
Attack on an elderly person should put him in prison the rest if his life. Although why he was out is unclear.
Looks like he said hmm I miss home let me give them another reason to come get me again!?? PLEASE KEEP HIM!
Too bad they couldn’t take him back to North Florida Regional and give the victim a scalpel to peel that ink off his face. Maybe let him hit a couple times with a defibrillator too.
If Mathis has a heart attack during the process – no loss. If something thinks otherwise, he wouldn’t be homeless.
Fairly reserved tats, plus one is a cross–that’s gotta work in his favor!
This POS is just another example of a rabid animal who has reason to be free walking the streets of our community. 21 convictions and four prison terms.
A face only a mother (blind?) could love.
Throw away the key. This scumbag doesn’t deserve freedom so he can hurt others.
Send him back to where he came from…
Judges are keeping them here during hot summers so they don’t run off. Lawyers will lose the fees if they do.
But these creeps should be locked up in Haiti where it never cools off. ACLUSPLCDNC 🤡👺👹👿💩
Obviously, prisoners being released from prison know were to be sent to Gainesville. Great vacation spot!! They will keep coming back. Wait until motels the County bought open up.
14, count em folks, 14 felony convictions 2 that were violent. Surprised the judge didn’t ROR the DEF and call it a day.
Who did away with the Three Strikes law? Keep em close & loaded friends.
This is the 3rd attack on a person over 65 this week. The homeless are getting more aggressive. Dang, a 75 y.o. on a freaking walker. The other day it was a 65 y.o. man attacked outside of a gas station for not giving a man $3. Wake up Judges, Commissioners, and state attorney. Your town is turning into Chicago.
This man deserves to be locked up and the key thrown away . I was visiting my dad this day and on my way to work when this happened .i seen the victim and his head was busted open but he was talking so it was a good sign. I went to the hospital after work to check on him but they couldn’t give me much information. People like this are sick & don’t deserve to walk around freely
He looks like an antifa…
The Prison Welcoming Committee should be licking their chops for this one…
DO NOT release a prisoner if they have no money, and no place to go.
