Memorial Day message from Mayor Ward
Press release from the City of Gainesville
Dear Neighbor,
In some of the first words of our foundational document as Americans, we promise each other that we will “provide for the common defense.” For more than 250 years we’ve done so by establishing armed forces and the systems to support them.
The armed forces of our nation, at their most basic level, are the daughters and sons, the friends, co-workers, fellow students, and, yes, neighbors, of our community and every community, who agree to lay their lives on the line on our behalf. Some of those daughters and sons pay the ultimate price to guarantee our safety and security.
Today the City of Gainesville pauses our regular business to recognize and honor their sacrifice and that of their families and loved ones. Today we consider the truth that every name on every military tombstone represents someone’s child who never came home. Today I pause to remind myself that the best way we can honor them is to continue to participate in this American system they fought and died to defend.
I hope you will join me in honoring them today, and every day, in the way you find most appropriate.
Thank you, and I wish you a meaningful Memorial Day 2025.
Harvey
People died to protect and preserve the rights some politicians are doing their damndest to take away.
Remember that.
Did Ward serve in the military?
Don’t know.
The ruling Commander- In-Chief didn’t.
Story is he cried about bone spurs or something to avoid serving; at the rate he’s going, they should have kept him from ruling over our military.
And Joe made up Asthma as a reason for dodging military service. He did fine playing football and baseball in high school. He brags about how great his was but could muster military service. Meow
Thanks for reminding me, you are correct. Care to admit the same?
Some people have real difficulty with reality.
Especially if it goes against their leader.
Did Wimpy from Popeye serve in the military? I think we can guess the answer to that one, too.
